Mount Vernon City Schools has announced its participation in the USDA's Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Program (FFVP), a national initiative designed to promote healthy eating habits among students. The program will provide free, nutritious snacks of fresh fruits and vegetables to elementary students in grades K-5 throughout the district.
The district applied for and received a grant to implement this program, demonstrating its commitment to student health and well-being. The FFVP not only supplies fresh produce but also encourages children to broaden their understanding and appreciation of various fruits and vegetables. Students will have the opportunity to try items such as grapefruit, snap peas, pineapple, raspberries, and radishes.
“We believe that promoting healthy choices is key to supporting our students' growth and well-being,” said Meg Reed, Director of Food Services. “We are thrilled to offer this program to enhance their school experience.”
To keep families informed about the program offerings, the district has created an FFVP Calendar. This calendar details the fruits and vegetables available on Wednesdays and Fridays and can be accessed on the district’s website under the ‘Lunch Menu’ tab.
Parents or guardians seeking more information about the program are encouraged to contact their building secretary for assistance. Through this initiative, Mount Vernon City Schools aims to promote healthier lifestyles for its students.
