On May 18, principal photography for the documentary feature, "Shopping for Superman," came to an end at Kenyon College’s Wright Center film studio.

The independently funded and produced feature film from director Wes Eastin, "Shopping for Superman," began in 2017 as a small-scale passion project.

The scope of the production grew as it garnered interest from comic industry veterans and passionate fans of the medium and is now on track to be a feature-length documentary exploring the unique history and impact of comic book shops across the United States.

“Comic shops are amazing resources that promote literacy and provide community in a time that really needs more of both,” Eastin said. “I saw news stories a few years back that showed sales were continuously on the decline for shops on a national level and thought I could make a film about something I love, that made a huge impact on my life, and maybe, hopefully, raise some awareness at the same time.”

In association with Kenyon College’s film department, Eastin built a comic shop set and brought in a variety of professionals from the motion picture industries, all former and current Ohio natives, including film students at Kenyon College.

“It’s extremely satisfying meeting so many talented people from Ohio who were able to come together and make this happen in just six days. We could all tell that this was something special,” the film’s production manager, Lindsey Conant, said.

Slated to wrap post-production before the end of summer 2024, the film’s producers plan to submit the project to a variety of film festivals which begin screening their selected programs as early as January 2025.

“It’s a short runway, but we have the momentum and we’re excited to see this project through. We’re planning a final crowdfunding campaign and are still reaching out for finishing funds to help us finish as strong as the production deserves,” Eastin said.
