Mount Vernon secures victory over Wooster in high-scoring Ohio Cardinal Conference clash

Mount Vernon (2-5, 1-3) and Wooster (2-5, 1-4) battled back-and-forth to the final quarter in a game between Ohio Cardinal Conference rivals, but the Yellow Jackets took a big first half lead and were able to hold off the Generals, 35-28.

Mount Vernon scored a touchdown in the first quarter with a 6-0 lead on a Jonny Askew one-yard touchdown, and then scored again in the second quarter to go up 13-0 on a big 75-yard running play by Mason Richards. Wooster scored on a 20-yard pass, but Mount Vernon scored on a short run by Mav Gregory to go up 21-7 at halftime.

In the third quarter Wooster tacked on a pair of scores on a pass and a running play, but Mount Vernon regained the lead with a score. Wooster battled with a touchdown in the fourth quarter, but the Yellow Jackets finished things off with a score on a 36-yard run by Askew to take the win.

Wooster ran all over Mount Vernon with 260 yards rushing, and had 131 yards in the air. Mount Vernon had 298 total yards, with 190 yards rushing and 108 yards passing. However, turnovers were the deciding factor, as Wooster had five in the game with Mount Vernon having none. Mount Vernon picked off three passes and recovered a pair of fumbles.

Sophomore linebacker Luke Mullins was big on defense for Mount Vernon, with a pair of picks and one that he took for about a 20 yard return in the first quarter. He was also solid stopping the run with two tackles for a loss, and had 18 total tackles. 

“Luke is the ultimate competitor,” said Assistant Coach Andrew Johnson. “He plays extremely tough and made some huge momentum swinging plays Friday night against Wooster, which ultimately helped the team achieve their first victory over Wooster.”

Mount Vernon’s Mason Richards ran the ball 11 times for 148 yards and two touchdowns. Jake Taylor was 3-for-8 passing for 108 yards. He also had a two point conversion pass for three yards. Jonny Askew had 20 carries for 69 yards and two touchdowns, and also caught a ball for 32 yards. Gregory had eight yards rushing and a touchdown. Reece Shonauer picked off a pass and returned it for 32 yards.
