Mount Vernon (14-5, 9-3) stumbled with a pair of losses to start the week in volleyball play, but bounced back with a sweep victory over West Holmes (4-14, 2-10) to take a conference win.
On Sept, 25, the Trojans (16-3, 9-1) and Mount Vernon went head-to-head in a matchup between two juggernauts of their respective conferences, but despite being in a lower division, Centerburg walked away with a 3-1 win.
Centerburg won the first set 25-19, but the Yellow Jackets took a 25-23 win in a back-and-forth set two. Centerburg won sets three and four by scores of 25-16 and 25-17.
Kaitlyn Thompson recorded seven kills and a dig. Audrey Stuller played well on defense, with a remarkable 30 digs. Senior Jurnie Gleason had 14 digs and fellow senior Ady Beaver recorded 11 digs. Emma Dean recorded five kills and the only two blocks for Mount Vernon.
The Trojans had a 16-5 ace advantage in the match.
It didn’t get any easier for Mount Vernon in a conference matchup with Wooster on Sept. 26, with the Yellow Jackets losing 3-0 by set scores of 25-20, 25-11 and 25-21. Thompson had seven kills in the match for Mount Vernon. Emma Dean and Madi Dudgeon each had two blocks. Stuller had another great night on defense with 29 digs, while Tori Burdette had 12 digs of her own. Gleason added 10 digs. Burdette had 15 assists to lead the setting.
The Yellow Jackets rebounded with a sweep win over West Holmes on Sept. 28, led by a 10 kill effort for Thompson.
Mount Vernon won 25-14, 25-17 and 25-14 in a convincing victory to get back on the winning track.
Stuller had 18 digs and Gleason added 10 digs. Burdette tallied 29 assists, while Emma Dean had nine kills and Gleason added seven kills.
