Knox County Ohio Indivisble will honor the late U.S. Rep. John Lewis with a Good Trouble protest focused on voting rights.

Knox County Ohio Indivisible (KCOI) will hold a protest on Sunday, July 19, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. along Coshocton Avenue across from Kroger, joining the nationwide Good Trouble Lives On weekend of action commemorating the anniversary of Lewis’ passing.

The protest will feature members of the local Indivisible chapter standing on the sidewalk with signs that emphasize the importance of voting. Leading with the phrase “Voting is Good Trouble,” the demonstration reflects Lewis’ call to challenge injustice through peaceful, nonviolent action. Organizers say the event is meant to affirm voting rights and encourage civic participation in Knox County.

“We want to affirm our voting rights, respond to the recent FBI raid of the Ohio Organizing Collaborative offices, and protest attempts by both federal and state authorities to suppress our right to vote,” Laurie Finke, co-chair of Knox County Ohio Indivisible, said, according to a press release.

National organizers have also underscored the urgency of the moment. In a Facebook post from the Indivisible Guide, the group framed the weekend of action as a response to ongoing voter suppression efforts: “HOW TO MAKE GOOD TROUBLE: We’re witnessing a Jim Crow-era effort from politicians to restrict our freedom to vote and silence Black and Brown communities in a desperate attempt to stay in power. But we won't let that happen. That's why, from July 17th - July 19th – six years after the passing of Civil Rights hero John Lewis – we're continuing the fight with the ‘Good Trouble Lives On Weekend of Action,’ a national nonpartisan, nonviolent weekend of action to resist threats against the right to the vote.”

The July 19 protest coincides with similar events across Ohio and the country. It also follows past demonstrations organized by KCOI along Coshocton Avenue, including “20 Reasons to Thank Labor Unions” in May and “Signs of Fascism” in November 2025. These actions highlight the group’s ongoing commitment to raising awareness about democracy, labor rights, and social justice.

According to the Good Trouble Lives On campaign, “Good Trouble” is a phrase coined by Lewis to describe the act of coming together to take peaceful, nonviolent action against injustice. The campaign continues his legacy by encouraging grassroots groups nationwide to organize events that defend democratic freedoms.

KCOI’s participation underscores the local chapter’s dedication to Lewis’s vision. By standing publicly with signs and messages, members hope to remind the community that voting remains a powerful tool for change and that defending access to the ballot is essential to democracy.

Founded in March 2025, Knox County Ohio Indivisible is a local chapter of Indivisible, a nationwide grassroots network. Its mission is to resist efforts to undermine democracy by advocating for inclusive policies and progressive change. The group organizes protests, educational events, and community actions to preserve voting rights and promote civic engagement.
