Wooster soccer takes down Jackets, 7-0

Mount Vernon boys soccer fell to 2-2 and 1-2 in OCC play when they were dominated by Wooster 7-0 on Sept. 6. The Generals improved to 4-3 overall and remain undefeated at 3-0 in OCC competition.

Wooster was up 3-0 at the half and added four tallies in the second half to make it a rout. Luis Canas, Jr. finished with a hat trick for Wooster. The Generals outshot the Jackets 20-10. Wooster had four corner kicks to one for MV. Noah McCallen made six saves for MV, Carter Buchholz only needed two saves for Wooster.

Mount Vernon next takes to the pitch on Sept. 12 vs. Lexington.

Stevens tops Sparetime Bowling League scores

In Sparetime Bowling League action at Colonial City Lanes in Mount Vernon on Sept. 5, Jeff Stevens rolled the highest series and two of the three highest single-game scores. Stevens finished with 229 and 207 games and totaled 617 for the three-game series. In second place was Andrew McAllister, who finished with 211 and 206 scores for his top two games and a total of 570 for the three-game set. Other 200 games were rolled by Terry Strong (204) and Brayden Page (200). Strong finished with the third-best three-game total of 533.

 In team play,  HCP took down Howard Hilton 4-0, The Lucky 13 swept Lanning 4-0, Brew Crew beat Blind 3-1, and all other matches ended in 2-2 ties: CCL Sparetimers vs. Blubaugh Hydraulics; Sheets & Giggles vs. Suzy’s Concession and Legacy Farm vs. McFarland Hauling.

In the league’s opening-week action, Aug. 29. Stevens rolled a 222 to lead all bowlers. Other 200 games were rolled by Chuck Young (214), Stevens (206) and Matt Harrell (202). Stevens’ 615 series was tops, followed by Young’s 550. In team action, Lucky 13 recorded the only 4-0 sweep – over Blind – and Bower Fire Extinguishers, Howard Hilton, Brew Crew McFarland Hauling and Blubaugh Hydraulics each won 3-1 tests and the other matches ended in 2-2 ties.

Lady Cougars place 4th in Battle at Brookwood

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s golf team placed fourth out of five teams in the Battle at Brookwood at the Brookwood Golf Club on September 4-5.

MVNU scored 676 (339, 337) over the span of two days. Senior, Jewel Goins finished third overall at the event with a score of 152 (77, 75).

Kenyon ‘B’ team claims seventh place at Denison

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- With half the Kenyon College golf team playing in the Transylvania Fall Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, the other half of the team competed in the two-day Ted Barclay Invitational at Denison Golf Club.

The Owls ‘B’ team registered a score of 306 on Saturday and returned Sunday to post a 313 for a two-round total of 619 in the field of nine teams. Wittenberg University ran away with the title, logging a final team total of 567. Host Denison placed second with a 588 and Otterbein University was third with a 596.

The Kenyon squad was led by senior Griffin Ward. He carded a 73 on Saturday and a 79 on Sunday. His overall total of 152 was good for a tie for 19th place among the field of 56 golfers.
