Kenyon College student-athletes represented the Owls with distinction in spring sports, with 15 being honored in athletics and 22 recognized for academics.
Track
The Kenyon men’s team had five athletes on the 2023 Academic All-District Team, chosen by College Sports Communicators, including seniors Jack Burczak and Michael Deal, juniors Riley Orth and Collin Witt, and sophomore Tapiwa Gono Phiri.
The women’s team had five athletes represented, including seniors Erika Conant, Alice Riley, Ella Wilson and Eras Yager, as well as sophomore Paula Soric,
Conant and Soric were also on the All-Region team for the Great Lakes Region, announced by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Athletes who qualify must be top five in an event in their region.
Conant was fifth in the NCAC heptathlon this season, with 3,296 points, and made the All-Region team for the first time. Soric has been named four times, in indoor and and outdoor track. She had an 11.77-meter leap in at the NCAC Championship, which was second-best in the Great Lakes Region and 30th in NCAA Division III.
Baseball
Making first team for All-North Coast Athletic Conference honors was sophomore Edwin Groff, who was also a second team All-American honoree. Groff was the team’s designated hitter and batted .443 to lead the Owls. He also led the team with 16 doubles, four triples, 62 hits and 101 total bases. His five homers and 38 RBIs were both second on the team. Groff posted a .721 slugging percentage, and had a team-high 1.198 OPS.
Groff was named to the d3baseball.com All-America Second Team, and Second-Team All-Region 7 by ABCA/Rawlings.
The Owls had three players make the NCAC second team. Freshman starting pitcher Theo Canning posted a 3-2 record with a 4.11 ERA. He pitched 50 innings, allowing 48 hits, with a .258 batting average against and struck out 45 betters, which was second on the squad. Junior third baseman Tripper Capps, another second-team selection, posted a .402 batting average and a 1.050 OPS. He hit 11 doubles, a triple and a homer with 23 RBIs. Junior second baseman Malcom Gaynor led the Owls with 39 RBIs, was third with a .354 batting average and belted a team-leading six homers and added 12 doubles.
Five Kenyon players were on the Academic All-District team: Gaynor, senior Kyle Dwyer, juniors Stephen Carr and Drew Robinson, and sophomore Frank Lynch.
Robinson also was named third-team all-NCAC, giving Kenyon five all-conference picks, the program's most since 2015, and the first time each player has been named.
Softball
Maeve McLaughlin and Arianna Jalomo were named All-NCAC this season. McLaughlin was named to the second team for a season in which she batted .315, .395 against NCAC teams, good for 16th in the conference, and a .965 OPS against conference teams, which ranked her 15th.
Jalomo hit .235 with a homer and six RBIs, but it was her play in NCAC contests that got her the recognition as she hit .324, going 12-for-37, compared to 8-for-48 against non-conference teams.
There were also five players on the Academic All-District Team: seniors Nicole Archambeau, Samantha Goldenson and Persy Hort; junior Maddie Friday; sophomore Natalya Delsante.
Archambeau played middle infield and started in 31 of 32 games, hitting .241 with 21 hits, four runs, three doubles, three walks and two runs scored. Goldenson played outfield, starting 11 of 19 games. Hort started 20 of 21 games played in the middle infield, going 10-for-32 with two doubles, one RBI, one walk, one run and one steal. Delsante batted .250 with seven runs, six walks, four doubles and two RBIs. To be eligible for Academic All-District, athletes need a 3.5 GPA or higher, while playing in at least half of the team’s games.
Golf
The men’s team had five golfers named to the Academic All-District At-Large Team, including Garrett Thesing, Armand Ouellette and Logan Spiess.
Spiess recently completed his senior year and majored in biochemistry. He had a scoring average of 76.81 in 21 rounds this season, and had the team's lowest score of the season with a 66 at the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational. His career scoring average of 78.05 is 12th in program history.
Thesing had a 76.08 average over 26 rounds this season, which was third on the team. He is majoring in molecular biology.
Ouellette had the second best scoring average of the season at 76.04. The sophomore is majoring in economics.
Lacrosse
The men’s lacrosse team had a pair of players recognized as Academic All-District, which requires having a 3.5 GPA and playing in at least 50% of the team’s competitions, as well as being on the roster for at least two years.
Midfielder Joe Boesel had a strong senior season with 17 goals and 17 assists in all games to help the team go 15-3 and share the NCAC regular-season title. He graduated with a degree in biochemistry.
Midfielder Rowan Goldin totaled 16 goals and seven assists in 17 games, and had a .400 shot percentage. The junior majors in neuroscience.
Finn Murray, Rollins Heath and Thomas Nelson were honorable mentions for the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association’s All-America Team. This is the first time since 1957 that Kenyon has had three players named.
Murray played short-stick defensive midfield, and in his senior year, he led the team with 20 caused turnovers. He was also first on the team with 60 ground balls. He recorded five points, with two goals and three assists, and was named First-Team All-NCAC.
Heath excelled in the midfield in his sophomore year and was also First-Team All-NCAC. He amassed 21 goals and 21 assists, and his 42 points was third best on the team. He also had 33 ground balls and forced six turnovers.
Nelson was one of the top face-off specialists in the country in his sophomore year, winning 73.2% – the best in NCAA Division III. He also gathered 183 ground balls, which is a Kenyon record and 10th best in Division III. The All-NCAC second-team selection was a USA Lacrosse Magazine Second-Team All-American.
