In the June 10 edition of the Mount Vernon News, we ran a recap of the OHSAA 115th annual boys, and 48th annual girls state track and field tournament, June 2-3, 2023, at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. In the article, we referred to first-, second- and third-place finishes in the traditional gold, silver and bronze results. We also referred to “podium” finishes in traditional track meet first-, second- and third-place results. At this all-Ohio event, the organizers expand the podium to include all top-eight finishers, who all receive all-Ohio status. Implying that fourth-through-eighth-place finishers did not make THIS podium would be an injustice to those student-athletes and we regret any confusion caused by our writing style.

The omission affected two local student-athletes. Girls Division III: In the 1600-meter run, Tess Shultz (Loudonville), finished fourth in 5:04.20. Boys Division III: In the 1600-meter run, Will Baker (Mount Gilead) placed seventh in 4:21.58. Both earned podium status.
