Fredericktown’s Carpenter hit a trey at the top of the key at the beginning of the third quarter to go up 35-13. Later in the quarter, Mast had a steal and fast break layup to make it a 45-15 game. Northmor 59, Mount Gilead 51
Northmor (1-1, 1-2) hosted Mount Gilead (2-1, 1-1) on Tuesday and despite a valiant effort by the Indians to stage a comeback, the Golden Knights gave their hometown fans a 59-51 win and were led by Grant Bentley’s 17 points.
Mount Gilead was down 13-2 with just under three minutes left in the first quarter but a steal from Carson Trainer, who then hit a three from the corner to follow, gave the Mount Gilead squad life after the extended run by Northmor.
It was an 18-5 game after one quarter in favor of Northmor, but Mount Gilead’s offense turned on and kept even with the Golden Knights in the second quarter with 12 points, making it a 30-17 at halftime.
With Northmor up 30-21 in the third quarter, Aaron Gannon had two blocks, back-to-back within seconds of each other, that got the ball back for Mount Gilead. With 3:48 left in the quarter, Rowan Fitzpatrick did his best Steph Curry impression with a 3-pointer from well beyond the arc to make it a 35-26 game. With the game at 40-28, Gannon had another big block to bring Mount Gilead back into transition.
In the fourth quarter, Gannon swished a corner three off a crisp assist by Fitzpatrick to make it a 42-31 game. The blocks kept coming for Gannon, who swatted another away in the fourth quarter as Northmor had a 48-35 lead. Matt Bland then made it a 48-42 game on a steal off an inbound pass, and then a three from the corner. Bland hit another three to make it 52-48, and despite the comeback attempt outscoring Northmor 23-17 in the fourth, the Golden Knights took home the 59-51 win.
Bentley was huge for the Golden Knights with 11 points in the fourth quarter, including five makes from the free-throw line.
Northmor basketball coach Blade Tackett liked his team's focus.
"We executed our game plan really well for a Mount Gilead team that scores a lot of points," Tackett said. "I think we made it tough on Matthew Bland all night even though he still ended up with 17. We have a talented team on both ends. Our biggest fault right now is playing with a lead. We were up 12 against Centerburg and gave that up. We were up 14 on Mount Gilead with 6:30 left in the fourth and they also made it close. Once we get better at playing with a lead, I believe we will have an extremely well-rounded team."
Bentley led the way with 17 points in the win for the Golden Knights, which included going 5-for-6 from the free-throw line and draining a pair of threes. Hunter Fulk and Jaxson Wagner each scored 14 points in the win.
Mount Gilead was led by Bland’s 17 points, including a pair of key threes down the stretch. Gannon had 13 points and was huge defensively near the basket blocking shots and creating offense. Fitzpatrick scored eight points highlighted by his long-range three.

In the second quarter, McDaniel struck again from deep with a three to give Utica a 13-10 lead. The game was tied again at 15-15 and McDaniel continued his hot hand from downtown with a corner three to go up 18-15. Utica was up 20-15 and Zanesville was threatening to score, but Dylan Yates made a swift defensive move to swat away a shot. However, Zanesville went on a 7-2 run to end the quarter, making it a 22-22 game at halftime.

Elgin 62, Cardington-Lincoln 39
Cardington-Lincoln (3-2, 0-1) was coming off a big win over Delaware Christian, but Elgin (3-0, 1-0) brought their “A” game in a 62-39 win Tuesday.
The Pirates were down 15-9 after one quarter and it didn’t get any easier in the second with Elgin outscoring Cardington-Lincoln 19-10 to take a 34-19 lead into halftime. Elgin continued to control the game in the third quarter, taking a 53-31 lead, and then outscored the Pirates 9-8 in the fourth quarter.
AJ Brehm was the top scorer for the Pirates with 12 points on the day. AJ Hall had eight points in the game.
“Tuesday, we as a team did not execute our game plan,” said Cardington-Lincoln Coach Jason Rice. “All offseason and season so far, we have been talking about being the more disciplined and focus team and tonight we did not follow through. Elgin is a well-coached and experienced varsity team and we knew in order to have a chance against them we would have to play very well. Unfortunately, this was not the case and we talked in the locker room after the game that this is a game we will learn from.”
