7 soccer Cougars earn CoSIDA academic recognition

Four members of the Mount Vernon Nazarene men's soccer team and three members of the women's team were named to the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors) Academic All-District Team members for the 2022 calendar year. 

Cougars Zack Bowser, Sam Hershey, Jared Mount and Ryan Walters each were named to the NAIA All-District Team after strong seasons for MVNU, and Lady Cougars Ashley Townsend, Sarah Townsend and MacKenzie Thorne each were named to the NAIA District 1 Team.

The 2022 Academic All-District Men's and Women's soccer teams selected by CoSIDA recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in the competition realm and in the classroom. The CoSIDA Academic All-America program separately recognizes honorees in four divisions – NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.

Cougars shine in the classroom

Bowser, a stealthy center-mid for MVNU, received an All-Crossroads League honorable mention for the season. The pre-med major from Chesterton, Ind., finished the semester with a 3.84 GPA.

Hershey had an impressive season on the field as a midfielder. Hershey was a constant all-around contributor for the team who managed to obtain a high academic standing as well. The accounting major from Mentor, Ohio, had a 3.76 GPA.

Mount had a strong year as a defender for the team. Mount was able to be a reliable defensive presence throughout the year, while also maintaining good grades in the classroom. The pre-med major from Lexington, Ohio, finished with a 3.70 GPA.

Walters, a standout defender for the team, received an All-Crossroads League honorable mention for the 2022 season. The business administration major from Marysville, Ohio, finished with a 3.71 GPA.

Lady Cougars study and play strong

Ashley Townsend was named an All-Crossroads League honorable mention recipient in 2022. Having already graduated with a business & sports management degree, the midfielder from New Concord finished the season with a 4.0 GPA. Townsend had a standout season on the field as an anchor on MVNU’s back line. 

Sarah Townsend joined her sister in earning an All-Crossroads League honorable mention nod. Townsend has already completed her undergrad in biology. The defender from New Concord wrapped up the season with a 4.0 GPA.

Thorne had a strong season as a midfielder for MVNU. Thorne was a reliable source for the team throughout the year, while also getting it done in the classroom. The biology major finished with a 3.61 GPA.
