Fighting Scots student-athletes earn winter MOAC recognition

Honors and recognition to 13 members of Highland High School’s winter athletic programs have been announced by the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference.

Second team all-conference girls basketball honors went to Highland's Emma West, and honorable mention went to Brylinn Tuggle.

Second team all-conference boys basketball honors went to Jordan Bellamy and Garrett Fitzpatrick. Honorable mention went to Brock Church.

Highland’s Joleigh Burson was named to girls bowling first team, Elyssa Reigles made second team and Faith Stewart earned honorable mention. In boys bowling, James Blaney and Jesse Reigles made second team, and Trevor Stewart and Rusty Martin earned honorable mention.

Among MOAC student-athletes who have signed college commitments are five Fighting Scots. Girls soccer player Jada Mullins has signed at Tiffin (Ohio) University; volleyball player Ashlynn Belcher has signed at Old Dominion University (Norfolk, Va.); volleyball player Kendall Stover has committed to Grand Valley State University (Allendale, Mich.) ; and boys basketball player Rider Minnick and men’s bowling player James Blaney II have both committed to Mount Vernon Nazarene University.

Gow gains national honorable mention from NCBWA

Kenyon College senior Alex Gow turned in a pitching performance that caught the eye of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, which declared Gow its honorable mention selection for National Pitcher of the Week honors.

On Friday, March 18, Gow put an end to Kenyon’s spring break schedule in Florida by guiding the Lords to a 10-1 victory over Hood College. In that 7-inning game, Gow went the distance and allowed no earned runs. He struck out 15 batters while allowing just five hits and two walks.

So far through the early portion of the team’s 2022 schedule, Gow is 2-0 in three appearances. He has a 0.00 earned run average, a 1.06 WHIP, a .188 batting average against and 30 strikeouts in just 18 innings of work.

Lady Cougars softball receive votes in Coaches’ Poll

The Mount Vernon Nazarene University softball team continues to receive votes in the 2022 NAIA Softball Coaches’ Top 25 Poll.

The Lady Cougars are currently riding an 11-game winning streak and come into the second rendition of the Coaches’ Poll with a 14-2 record. MVNU has begun Crossroads League play with sweeps of Spring Arbor University and the University of Saint Francis to boast a 4-0 conference record.

MVNU ireceived 28 votes and is one of three Crossroads League teams in the poll. Indiana Wesleyan University sits ranked at No. 9 and Marian University comes in at No. 16.

 

Mount Vernon Babe Ruth League new-player tryouts

New-player tryouts for 2022 Babe Ruth League baseball are set for Saturday, March 26, from 9 a.m. to noon at Memorial Park on Mount Vernon Avenue. The Mount Vernon Babe Ruth Association, doing business as Knox Babe Ruth League of Knox County, has scheduled in-person registration for 13- to 16-year-olds.
