Lady Jackets top Pickering North in softball

The Mount Vernon softball team continued its exhibition season with a 5-3 win over Pickerington North on March 17. Taking the sting out of its opening-season loss to Triway the previous day, Mount Vernon collected eight hits and played error-less ball in topping the Panthers.

Mount Vernon pushed across three runs in the top of the first and allowed two in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-2 lead after one. Pickering North tied the score 3-3 with a run in the third, and the Lady Jackets won it with two runs in the fifth, then closed the door and came home with the 5-3 victory.

Emily Calkins and Mac Schlosser each connected for two hits for Mount Vernon, and Lilly Erb reached base with two walks. Rhyli Pope and McKenzie Kronwapple each drove in two runs, and Schlosser drove across one. Pope pitched four innings for Mount Vernon, threw 13 first-pitch strikes and struck out three in gaining the win.

Mount Vernon Babe Ruth League new-player tryouts

New-player tryouts for 2022 Babe Ruth League baseball are set for Saturday, March 26, from 9 am. - noon at Memorial Park on Mount Vernon Avenue. The Mount Vernon Babe Ruth Association, doing business as Knox Babe Ruth League of Knox County, has scheduled in-person registration for 13- to 16-year-olds.

Kenyon golfers finish in middle of pack at Jekyll Island

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. -- The Kenyon College golf team started its spring season last weekend at Jekyll Island Golf Club and placed 16th among 30 teams over the course of the three-round Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational, hosted by Oglethorpe University.

The Lords got things going with a team score of 295 on Friday. On Saturday, they lowered that to a 289 and then posted another 295 Sunday for a final stroke count of 879, which was 15 over par.

The field was filled with nationally ranked teams, including No. 16 Sewanee, which took the Invitational title with a final score of 13-under-par 851. No. 1-ranked Methodist University was second, scoring an 853, and No. 2-ranked Emory University was third with an 854.

Individually for Kenyon, senior Eric Lifson led the way with scores of 70, 70 and 75, for a one-under-par total of 215. That was good enough to place him in a tie for 22nd place in the field of 150 golfers and 30 teams.

Kenyon sophomore Armand Ouellette carded rounds of 74, 71 and 73 for a two-over-par 218 and a tie for 35th place.

Senior Nick Lust tied for 76th place with a 224, fellow senior Ethan Manalo put up a 227, tying for 90th place, and Andrew Kotler, also a senior, registered a 229 and a tie for 96th place.

MVNU Lacrosse shows defense to shut down Trojans

UPLAND, Ind. – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s lacrosse team (5-2) defeated Taylor University (2-4) by a score of 10-4 in Upland, Ind., on Saturday, March 19.

MVNU got payback on Taylor in the second matchup of the season. The Trojans had previously defeated the Cougars 12-9 at Cougar Field back on March 5. Mount Vernon took control from the start as it put two on the board in the first quarter. A strong second frame saw MVNU lead 5-1 at halftime. MVNU remained in control, outscoring Taylor 5-3 in the second half to take the victory.

Brett Townsend scored a team-high three goals for MVNU in the game, and Ian Ranck had a team-high four points. Ranck had one goal and three assists. Kaden Tinner added two goals, and Jason LaAsmar chipped in with two goals to go with four ground balls. Matt Quire and Micah Rex also added a goal apiece for the Cougars. On the defensive side, MVNU goalie Joshua Hageman put on a show guarding the net. Hageman made 18 saves and only allowed four goals.
