Mount Vernon Babe Ruth League new-player tryouts set

New-player tryouts for 2022 Babe Ruth League baseball are set for Saturday, March 26, from 9 am. to noon at Memorial Park on Mount Vernon Avenue. The Mount Vernon Babe Ruth Association, doing business as Knox Babe Ruth League of Knox County, has scheduled in-person registration for 13- to 16-year-olds.

Jackets grad finishes second twice in college meets

Logan Meyer, a 2018 graduate of Mount Vernon High School, finished second twice at the 2-day North Coast Atlantic Conference (NCAC) championships at Wittenburg University in Springfield on Feb. 25-26. Meyer a senior at Allegheny College (Meadville, Pa.) ran the 5000-meter race (3.11 miles) in 14:59.82 and finished second, earning him All-NCAC honors. On Saturday, he ran the 3000M with a time of 8:39.5, finishing second and again earning him All-NCAC honors.

Also on Saturday, Meyer ran on leg of the 4x800M relay and Allegheny finished eighth in a time of 10:48.75. This ended his indoor track career.

Meyer will be running outdoor track in the spring and is on course to graduate with a degree in environmental sciences in May.

Cougars bowlers earn league honors

The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s and women’s bowling team had multiple members earn honors from the Crossroads League on Wednesday, March 9.

Women’s bowling coach Amber Brubaker received the Champions of Character honor as a coach from the Crossroads League. Sophomore Hannah Vaughn also was named as a member of the Champions of Character team. Vaughn, a Fredericktown High School graduate, was named to the Women’s All-Crossroads League second ream and All-Academic team. Chyann Welch earned All-Academic team honors as well. Additionally, freshman Camryn Taylor earned a spot on the Women’s All-Newcomer team.

The MVNU men’s bowling team had three members earn honors. Freshman Luke Jahn was named to the Men’s All-Newcomer team after a solid first season in blue and green. Cougar freshman Blake Crow landed himself a spot on the Champions on Character team for the 2021-22 season, and junior Cullen Rogan earned a spot on the All-Academic team for his efforts in the classroom.

MVNU softball receives votes in national poll

The Mount Vernon Nazarene University softball team received votes in the first regular season edition of the 2022 NAIA Softball Coaches’ Top 25 poll on Wednesday, March 9.

MVNU started the season strong as it left Kissimmee, Fla., with an 8-2 record through its first 10 games of the 2022 season.

Oregon Tech remained in the top spot with Oklahoma City just four points back. College of Idaho dropped one spot to No. 3. MVNU is one of three teams in the Crossroads League either ranked or receiving votes. Indiana Wesleyan leads the charge at No .8, while Marian sits at No.16. MVNU is the third team, receiving 12 votes in the poll, putting it 36th of the 41 teams, nationally, that received votes.
