Camie Newbold | Danville HS

The Mount Vernon News sports department’s 25th ATHLETE OF THE WEEK nominations continues the established procedure of spotlighting student-athletes’ skills and performances on the fields and courts of action.

Based on performances, we ask ADs, coaches and the community to nominate one boy and one girl from their athletic programs to compete against other schools’ nominations. We ask for a recap of their worthy performances and a picture. Please send your nominations to me, Mike Blake, MVN Sports Editor, at mike.blake@mountvernonnews.com. Make sure YOUR school is represented.

For the second week in a row, we have a clean sweep for Danville basketball players, as Camie Newbold and Cam Miller both helped their teams advance in the playoffs, through inspiration, tough defense and offensive determination.

FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Camie Newbold

The Danville Blue Devils girls basketball team is 17-5 and advanced to the tegional semifinals with a 41-39 win over Fisher Catholic in the district final. Camie Newbold was an inspirational leader in the game with her gritty play and tenacity on the boards. Danville coach Matt Proper said, “Camie Newbold played a huge role on the defensive side of the ball in our win over Fisher Catholic. She had 10 rebounds, two steals, and helped to hold their two post players (including their leading scorer) to 12 total points.”

Newbold pulled five boards off the offensive glass and five off defensive shots to lead the Lady Devils. Her basket midway through the third put Danville on a run to come from behind, take the lead and go on to win the game.

Proper said, “Camie Newbold is a natural leader in the classroom and on the court, and is a big reason for our success this season. Camie has had a great career as a Lady Blue Devil. Recently, she was named honorable mention All Central District and All Academic KMAC.”

MALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Cam Miller

Cam Miller put on a first-half show to inspire the Blue Devils' sectional victory over Tree of Life, 53-51, to propel them into the District 4 semifinals. Miller scored eight of Danville’s 14 points in the first and 10 of the Blue Devils’ 18 in the second, for 18 of his team’s 32 first-half points to help his team take a 32-27 lead into the locker room.

Miller finished the game with 20 points and was 4-for-6 from beyond the arc and 4-for-7 inside the 3-point line. He also dished out two assists. Danville’s basketball coach, Matt Moore, said, “Cam has been a senior leader for us this year. He works hard every day in practice to make himself and teammates better on both sides of the ball. He deserves this honor.”

Congratulations on a great week by our ATHLETES of the WEEK, Camie Newbold and Cam Miller, and congratulations to all local athletes for solid efforts.

To all local schools: Send us your athlete nominations for next week and show them and the community how much they mean to their schools.
