Lady Pirates remain undefeated, dominate Bucyrus, 79-25
Cardington-Lincoln continued its undefeated dance and improved to 10-0 with a convincing nonconference 79-25 shellacking of Bucyrus on Tuesday night.
The blowout extended the Lady Pirates’ winning streak to 48 consecutive regular season games, and they continue to own a 62-straight KMAC winning streak. The Redmen (1-6) lost their fifth straight game and were outmatched from the outset. Cardington-Lincoln took at 20-8 first-quarter lead and put things away with a 24-10 second quarter to go into the locker room at halftime ahead 44-18.
In the first, C-L got eight points from Beth Hardwick and six each from Mikayla Linkous and Kambry Edwards. In quarter No. 2, six Lady Pirates scored, led by Bertke and Edwards with six each.
The third quarter was more of the same, as the Lady Pirates added 14 points to the lead with a 19-5 run to begin the fourth quarter up 63-23. The Redmen reserves could not keep up with C-L's reserves in in the fourth and fell 16-2 in the quarter to end with a 54-point loss. Cardington-Lincoln got balanced scoring in the second half, as seven girls contributed, led by Hardwick’s nine.
For the game, Cardington-Lincoln received scoring additions from eight girls, with four senior girls reaching double figures. Hardwick led the Lady Pirates with 20 points, Kambry Edwards hit for 16, Linkous scored 15 and Dana Bertke popped in 13. Senior Emalee Artz added nine. Sharpshooting Cardington-Lincoln hit 62% of its two-point attempts at 24-for-39 and shot better than 50% from the field overall – 31-for-60. Linkous was particularly deadly, hitting five of seven shots, while Artz sank four of six. Hardwick was four-for-seven from 3-point range.
Dominating both ends of the court, C-L picked off 13 offensive boards and 15 defensive caroms and recorded 26 steals. Bertke grabbed nine rebounds – four offensive and five defensive – to lead the Pirates. Linkous picked Redmen pockets for eight steals while Karsyn Edwards and Bertke each picked off five and Kambry Edwards stole four. Adding to the complete defensive control, the Lady Pirates also totaled three blocks and 19 deflections. Linkous was tenacious with seven deflections. C-L also protected the ball, turning it over only seven times, to 26 for Bucyrus.
Freddies lose heart-breaker to Clear Fork, 50-47
Fredericktown started well, fought off Clear Fork challenges, then went down to the wire and took two shots to tie before losing, 50-47.
Fredericktown, 6-4, 3-2 KMAC, played to an 11-11 first quarter against the Colts, who improved to 9-1. Audrey Bouton scored five, and she and Jill Bouton each drained threes in the first for the Freddies. The second quarter went 15-7 in favor of Fredericktown, and the Freddies were up at halftime, 26-18.
Despite eight points on four field goals by Fredericktown’s Gabby Daniels, a strong third quarter by the Colts (20-13) put the score at 39-38 Freddies entering the fourth. The final quarter was seesaw, and the game was tight into the final minute. Fredericktown went cold, its only field goal a three by Daniels.
Freddies coach Tim Maceyko said, “It was a one-point game with under 20 seconds left. Fredericktown got two shot opportunities but couldn’t connect. It was a heart-breaking loss.”
The Freddies got scoring from five girls and were led by Daniels with 17 points, Cally Carpenter with 10, Audrey Bouton with nine and Jill Bouton with eight.
