Lady Pirates sink Vikings 66-35, tame Tigers 56-51

The Cardington-Lincoln Lady Pirates upped their early-season record to 2-0 with a 66-35 drubbing of the Columbus Academy Vikings (0-1), last Tuesday.

The Pirates jumped out to a 22-6 lead in the first quarter and increased the advantage to 39-18 at halftime. An 18-6 third quarter put the game on ice (57-24) before the Pirates' reserves finished off the game with a 31-point margin.

Beth Hardwick, fresh off a 19-point outing in the season opener vs. Ridgedale, put nine points on the board in the first for Cardington-Lincoln. Teammate Dana Bertke, who had 12 in the opener, also put nine through the twine in the first quarter. Bertke continued her show with seven more in the second quarter, and Mikayla Linkous hit for four.

In the third, Hardwick, Linkous and Emalee Artz each scored four, and in a taking-it-easy fourth, Karsyn Edwards hit a long three to lead the scoring.

The Cardington offense for the game saw Hardwick leading the way with 17. Bertke had 16, Artz dropped in eight, Kamry Edwards scored six and Karsyn Edwards put in five.

Cardington-Lincoln beat Marion Pleasant, 56-51, on Saturday to increase the season mark to 3-0,with a 180-112 scoring advantage. Mount Pleasant is 2-1.

The Lady Tigers matched the Lady Pirates in the first quarter 10-10, and in the second, 11-11, for a halftime tie at 21 apiece.

Pleasant lofted home six 3-pointers in a wild third quarter that saw them outscore C-L 23-17 for a 44-39 lead going into the fourth. In the final quarter, the Lady Pirates played tough defense and allowed only seven points against, while scoring 18 themselves on eight by Hardwick and four apiece by Linkous and Artz.

In the game, Hardwick scored 25 points and hit 9 of 18 from the floor – 4 of 8 from 3-point range. Kambry Edwards scored nine – three 3-pointers, and Karsyn Edwards hit for eight – two 3-pointers. Hardwick also pulled down seven boards and had three steals, and Karsyn Edwards had five rebounds and a team-high seven steals. Kambry Edwards led the team with seven assists and had three steals. Bertke had three blocks and four steals, and Linkous had three steals.

After three games Hardwick has 61 points (20.3 ppg) and is hitting 55% of her shots, and Bertke is averaging 10.7 with 32 points. Bertke and Hardwick also lead the team in rebounding at 6.3 rpg and 6.0 rpg respectively. Bertke has seven deflections, and Linkous has four. Kambry Edwards had 16 assists, and Bertke was second for C-L with 10.

Golden Knights conquer Lady Scots, 53-36

After a tight first half, Northmor was too much for Highland on the girls basketball court last week. Northmor jumped out to a 15-7 first-quarter lead, but Highland came back with an 18-9 second-quarter advantage to close the half with a 25-24 lead. The second half was all Northmor, who took the third quarter 16-5 and the fourth quarter 13-6 for the final score of 53-36.

Northmor shot 40 percent from the floor and was 7 of 18 from 3-point range, while Highland hit only 28 percent of its shots and was 7 for 28 from beyond the arc. Northmor also hit 18 points inside the paint to 10 for the Lady Scots, and the Golden Knights had the advantage in steals, 15-10, while forcing 26 turnovers to 20 of their own.

Northmor was led by Paige Caudill with 15 points and Brooklyn Dennison with 14. Lexi Wenger scored nine and had nine rebounds. For Highland, Brylinn Tuggle scored 13 and had three steals, and Guinevere Jackson scored 12.

Freddies mount fourth-quarter charge but fall to Wildcats, 46-38

The North Union Wildcats girls basketball team won their home opener, defeating the Fredericktown Freddies 46-38 to even the Freddies’ record at 1-1.

The Freddies carried a 9-6 lead into the second quarter on a bucket apiece by Krissie Gaines, Audrey Bouton and Gabby Daniels and three free throws, but they ran into a Wildcat buzz saw in the second, when they were outscored 17-3 to give North Union a 23-12 halftime lead.

The Freddies came battling back and won both the third and fourth quarters. In the third, the Freddies had a 9-8 advantage but couldn’t cut more into the Wildcats’ lead. The Freddies, who came out shooting in the period, put two baskets by Grace Sipes, one by Daniels and three free throws on the board.

In the fourth, Daniels put on a fighting display by netting five baskets for 10 points. Sipes hit for four and Cally Carpenter sank two, but even a 17-15 Freddies advantage in the quarter did not stop the Wildcats from bringing home the win.

Blue Devils get scoring from 9 girls, top Northridge, 66-43

Danville’s girls basketball team got scoring help from nine players as it rode a big second quarter to down the Northridge Vikings, 66-43.

The Blue Devils put the ball through the hoop for 17 first-quarter points en route to a 17-14 lead on contributions from four Lady Blue Devils. Ella Proper hit a pair of field goals and two free throws to net six points in the first quarter, and Cece Newbold hit a shot from the field and went 4-for-4 at the line in her 6-point first quarter. The Blue Devils took a 17-point lead into the half with a 23-9 second quarter. Five Danville girls scored in the quarter, driven by Brooklyn Hess’s three 3-pointers.

A 19-9 third quarter put the game on ice at 59-32. Six Lady Blue Devils hit net in the third, led by Newbold’s six, and three-pointers from Proper and Kaylee Hess.

The fourth quarter was a low-scoring one at 11-8 for Northridge, and Danville scored all of its points at the foul stripe to return home with a 66-43 victory.

Among the nine Lady Blue Devils who scored, Newbold had 14 points, Proper scored 13 points, Brooklyn Hess hit for 12 points and Kylee Hess and Alenah Boeshart each scored nine.
