OHSAA state track recaps: Laracuente-Huebner quadruples in Owens fashion at Owens Stadium in state track tourney

Highland’s Juliette Laracuente-Huebner, who wins gold in groups of four, quadrupled again at the state level. She won four golds at the Division II, Region 6 meet at Lexington and also quadrupled in the MOAC championship. She tripled at the Westerville Divisional meet.
Highland softball returns 7 letter winners, enters new conference

The Highland softball team has a strong returning group of players with seven letter winners including five seniors, and Coach Abby Steele feels that the experience her squad is bringing to the table this year should lead to success in the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference (MOAC), which the team is returning to this season.

The Highland Fighting Scots are coming off one of the best seasons in school history where the baseball club dominated on the diamond going racking up a school record 29 wins with only three losses, while being named KMAC Co-champions, as well as sectional and district champs.

Lester’s buzzer-beater 3, propels East Knox to road OT win over Smithville, 45-44. The host Smithville Smithies came into their home non-conference game against the visiting East Knox Bulldogs, with an 11-2 record and a first-place standing in Wayne County Conference play at 8-1. The Bulldogs entered at 11-4 and 8-2 in KMAC play, and the game lived up to the hype of two top teams battling it out, with the outcome going down to the final buzzer, with East Knox coming from behind and prevailing, 45-44 in overtime.

On Dec. 21 the Highland boys’ basketball team hosted the Galion Tigers and came home with a 66-61 victory. Highland was up 29-24 at the half thanks to some solid play by Dane Nauman, who scored seven of his 10 points in the quarter. On Dec. 22 the Marysville and Mount Vernon boys’ basketball teams squared off and it went all the way to double overtime for Marysville to walk away with a 61-59.

Scots lose game at the line to Pleasant, 62-57. The Highland Scots traveled to Pleasant High School on Dec. 4, and in a tough and close game, that was decided by free throw performance, the Scots went home with a 62-57 loss in what was the first win of the season for Pleasant. Mount Vernon wins 62-61 thriller over Mansfield. A tight first half moved into a come-from-behind situation in the second half for Mount Vernon (2-2, 1-0 OCC), as they beat Mansfield (2-2 1-1 OCC) in a thriller, 62-61.

Lady Pirates sink Vikings 66-35, tame Tigers 56-51The Cardington-Lincoln Lady Pirates upped their early-season record to 2-0, with a 66-35 drubbing of the Columbus Academy Vikings (0-1), last Tuesday.The Pirates jumped out to a 22-6 lead in the first quarter and increased the advantage to 39-18 at halftime.

In what is being labeled as “The Game,” old is new again, as the Highland Fighting Scots, wearing Sparta Warriors uniforms, will play the Fredericktown Freddies, Friday at the Old Gym at Highland Middle School (Old HS Gym). Game time is 6 p.m. for the JV game and 7:15 for the Varsity tip-off.

Pirate girls run and gun away from Rockets 58-26. The Cardington-Lincoln Pirates and Ridgedale Rockets girls basketball squads were tied 10-10 at the quarter, but C-L dominated the rest of the way, leading 27-17 at the half and allowed only 3 points in the third quarter to take a 37-20 lead, then romped to a 21-6 fourth quarter to win it 58-26.

The Highland boys basketball team is coming off a tough season in which the Scots went 5-17 and lost in the sectionals in the tournament to Hartley 49-43. While the challenges continue with the team switching conferences, the Scots bring back depth with nine returning lettermen.

Bulldogs slow Nauman, Scots, 31-3. The eighth-seeded Highland Fighting Scots were 9-2 and had outscored the opposition 337-199 entering the Division IV, region 15 semi-final against undefeated No.1-ranked Bloom-Carroll. Co-KMAC Player of the Year Dane Nauman was rushing at a clip of better than 10 yards per carry. Roughriders run roughshod over Northmor, 63-13. The No. 6-seeded Northmor Golden Knights hit the Division VI, Region 23 semifinals with a 9-2 record, having outscored their foes 284-173. But in the play-offs, there is always someone with better stats, as No.3 West Jefferson entered the game at 10-1, with a 420-132 points advantage. It didn’t take long to see where those stats came from.

The Highland Lady Scots defeated Cristo Rey on Wednesday, by a 3-0 score and finished the regular season as undefeated Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference (MOAC) Champions.The Lady Scots, ranked No. 9 in District 2, ran their season record to 20-4 overall, and 14-0 in the MOAC with a convincing 25-9, 25-5, 25-7 sweep over the Cougars (5-8).

Highland Boys triumph over River Valley in Senior Night Soccer. Fishburn Family Field saw a tribute to seniors and a solid home field victory for the Highland Scots (4-8, 2-3 Mid-Ohio), as the Scot boys soccer team defeated visiting River Valley, 4-1 in Tuesday night action. Cardington-Lincoln bests Freddies in tight match. The Fredericktown girls varsity volleyball team went into their Tuesday night home match against Cardington-Lincoln feeling confident, as their 15-1 record 7-1 KMAC record would indicate. But they were facing an equally confident C-L Pirates squad that came in 10-1 and 5-1 in conference. The two confident teams played three see-saw and tight sets, and the Pirates came away with a sweep that was closer than the final score suggested.
Scots boys play short-handed, beat Loudonville, 5-2

The Highland Scots boys soccer team met adversity with determination, and prevailed 5-2, at Loudonville, Saturday. The Scots traveled for a noon kick with the host Redbirds, who took a 1-0 lead after an early breakaway was saved by a tackle that was called a foul, resulting in a PK for the Redbirds. The 10-yard Loudonville shot hit the twine and made it 1-0 for the Redbirds, and soon thereafter, the Scots were forced to continue a player short (10 on 11) after a red card was issued. The Scots used this as motivation and hustled throughout to make up for the deficiency.
