Pirate girls run and gun away from Rockets, 58-26
The Cardington-Lincoln Pirates and Ridgedale Rockets girls basketball squads were tied 10-10 after the first quarter, but C-L dominated the rest of the way, leading 27-17 at the half and allowing only three points in the third quarter to take a 37-20 lead o the way to a 58-26 victory.
In the first, Cardington-Lincoln got a bucket apiece from five different girls, but in the second, 5-foot-9 senior Beth Hardwick drained three 3-pointers and 5-9 senior Dana Bertke hit a pair of baskets to lead the Pirate assault.
In the third, a swarming Pirate defense grounded the Rockets, while Hardwick hit another three of her 5 points in the quarter, and Kambry Edwards hit a three. Six Lady Pirates hit the twine in the fourth, led by Bertke (6 points) and Hardwick (another three of her 5 more points).
Among the eight girls who scored for the Pirates, Hardwick scored 19, Bertke hit 12 and Edwards had 10.
Big first, big fourth get Freddie girls past Lady Scots, 41-36
The Fredericktown Freddies took a 12-9 first-quarter lead on a monster 10-point performance by Gabby Daniels from four buckets and two free throws, then outscsored Highland by six in the fourth quarter to pull out a 41-36 win.
Brylinn Tuggle helped keep the Lady Scots in it with five first-quarter points. Fredericktown assumed a 20-16 lead at the half, with Audrey Bouton hitting a pair of shots from the floor in the second for Fredericktown, while Tuggle hit her second 3-pointer and a free throw in the quarter.
Despite Cally Carpenter hitting a three and two deuces in the third for the Freddies, a 14-9 third quarter edge by Highland gave the Lady Scots a 30-29 lead going into the fourth. The Scots were propelled by six points by Emma West and four more by Tuggle.
In the fourth quarter, Fredericktown took control and outscored the Scots 12-6, with scoring spread out among six girls, for the win.
Carpenter led the Freddies with 13 points, Daniels had 12 and Bouton scored six. Highland was paced by Tuggle and West with 13 points each, and Guinevere Jackson had 6.
