Highland Boys triumph over River Valley in Senior Night Soccer

Fishburn Family Field saw a tribute to seniors and a solid home field victory for the Highland Scots (4-8, 2-3 Mid-Ohio), as the Scot boys soccer team defeated visiting River Valley, 4-1, in Tuesday night action.

After recognizing the Flying Scots' seniors, Captain Jack Chaffee, Captain Hayden Styer, Jacob Davis, Collin Bowman and Adi Karya, the Highland soccer squad was inspired to avenge the 2-0 loss it suffered at River Valley last Thursday.

From start to finish, the Scots hustled and controlled the pace. Caleb Hunter attacked early with a direct kick from 26 yards out that caromed off the crossbar straight down to the goal line, but not across it – no goal. Hunter was denied again two minutes later when he hit the post and the ball rebounded back to the goalkeeper.

Soon thereafter, Dylan Thomas converted a penalty kick to begin the scoring. Zane Sheets made it 2-0 moments later off a slick pass from Mason Keller.

Highland came out of the halftime break with ball control and continued to attack. The pressure paid off when Hunter kicked one in the upper corner off a pass from Cody Thomas to make it 3-0. After River Valley got on the board to close to 3-1, Scots goalkeeper Karya made several acrobatic saves to preserve the lead. With about 15 minutes to go in the game, freshman Malin Fichtner hit a full volley from about 40 yards out that sailed over the Vikings’ keeper and under the crossbar for the final goal.

Cardington-Lincoln bests Freddies in tight match

The Fredericktown girls varsity volleyball team went into a Tuesday night home match against Cardington-Lincoln feeling confident, as its 15-1 record 7-1 KMAC record would indicate. But they were facing an equally confident C-L Pirates squad that came in 10-1 and 5-1 in conference. The two teams played three seesaw and tight sets, and the Pirates came away with a sweep that was closer than the final score suggested. The set scores were  25-22, 25-19 and 25-23, Cardington-Lincoln.

The Pirates attacked all game and held a 37-24 kill advantage. They had a 14-9 advantage in aces and forced the Freddies to dig … and dig they did – they wound up with 68 digs to 45 for the Pirates. The three tight sets came down to a dig here, a block there and a kill down there.

For Cardington-Lincoln, standout performers included junior Audrey Brininger with 17 kills, nine digs and all of her team’s 31 assists, and junior Payton Goodman with seven kills. Junior Jadine Mills served up six aces, and junior Cadie Long had 18 digs for the Pirates.

Senior Lindsey Boeshart led the Freddies with eight kills, four aces and 18 digs, senior Audrey Bouton had six kills and three blocks, and junior Izzy Wickline had a big game at the net with five blocks. Junior Grace Snipes finished with 16 digs, and senior Lainey Partington had 10 digs. Senior Katie Mull had half of the Freddies' assists – she finished with 11.
