Heath sweeps Redskins in close volleyball action
Sometimes the end result does not reflect the real ebb and flow of a match. The final score was Heath 3, Utica 2, in high school volleyball action Oct. 7. However, the competition was much closer than the final result. Heath won all three sets in close fashion, taking the first set 21-17 and eking out 25-21 set victories in the final two stanzas.
Utica in defeat received stellar play from Carlie Parsons with 16 digs; Lily Borem with 9 kills; Bell Ellis with 2 aces, 8 kills, 5 assists and 7 digs; Georgia Gamble with 6 kills and 7 digs; and Emilee Ellis with 2 kills, 23 assists and 8 digs.
Lords remain unbeaten in conference play
The Kenyon College men’s soccer team went on the road to defeat conference-rival Denison University, 2-0. The Lords improved to 8-1-1 on the year and 3-0 in North Coast Athletic Conference play.
The Lords got off to a quick start, applying pressure during the opening minutes of the game. The Lords cashed in on a shot from Aidan Burns in the 16th minute. Burns’ snuck his shot from 20 yards past Denison goalkeeper Dylan Brown. They tacked on to their one goal advantage in with 35 seconds left in the first half when Adam Silberg juked his defender and ripped a shot from the corner of the 18-yard box. Once the second half started, both teams picked up their intensity to find the back of the net. Both teams saw chances slip just wide of the net and the game ended 2-0.
Lady Cougars end Quad-Tournament with pair of wins
The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s volleyball team came from behind to beat Roosevelt University and Lourdes University in the final day of the Cougar Quad-Tournament.
The Lady Cougars had to overcome some adversity in the first match as Roosevelt played two consecutive competitive sets with MVNU. The first set finished with MVNU rallying to win 33-31, and the Lady Cougars were able to keep the momentum through the next two sets. In the second match, MVNU defeated Lourdes in four sets after dropping the first 19-25. MVNU took the last three sets by scores of 25-12, 28-26 and 25-16.
Top MVNU performers included Nicole Winkler with 33 kills for the two matches; Ellie Ruby with a two-match total of 48 digs; Tory Small with 28 kills for two matches; and Paige Brenner with a two-match total of 84 assists.
