When rain fell on Mount Vernon on July 17, USTA Northeastern Ohio Tennis Association’s “Meet Up” at Mount Vernon Nazarene University appeared to be in jeopardy.
It seemed like the 40 players who traveled from Cincinnati, Columbus and the Cleveland area to compete with members of the Mount Vernon High School tennis program did so for naught until Mount Vernon Schools District stepped up to serve.
East Elementary School teacher Steve Tier recalled the public school district’s last-minute heroics in the face of inclement weather on his Facebook.
“Mount Vernon City Schools saves the day . . . Mother Nature didn’t pay attention to the weather forecast and kept raining when it was supposed to stop,” Tier wrote. “We moved our lunch, speaker and matches to our Energy Fieldhouse at the last minute. It was a success due to our NEOTA rep Rebecca Hancart and our speaker, USPTA pro Lovell Crenshaw. Thank you, MVCSD!”
About a week prior, Mount Vernon varsity tennis player Quinn Hoffman premiered his brand new stroke at the fourth annual Frank Giampaolo Single Day Tournament.
The Mount Vernon News reported that Hoffman, who looks to secure the No. 1 singles spot on the team this year, placed second in his round-robin group in the tournament.
