David Metzger and Reed Russell, both senior members of the 2021 Kenyon College men's lacrosse team, were named to the The United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association’s (USILA) Scholar All-American Team, presented by Dynamic.
Additionally, the 2021 Lords received the USILA’s Academic Team award.
The USILA team honor is bestowed on squads that reach a grade point average of 3.0 or better for the academic year. The Kenyon men had no issue hurdling that mark, as the 29 members of the team combined for a 3.30 grade point average.
Individually, Metzger and Russell became the first two Lords two make the Scholar All-American Team since Patrick Shevelson did so following the 2016 season.
To be eligible, a student-athlete had to be nominated by his head coach and had to be in his senior year of academic standing. The nominee had to have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and had to behave in a manner that brought credit to himself, his institution, and to college lacrosse, both on and off the field. Finally, the nominee had to be an All-American, a member of a North/South All-Star Team, or an outstanding conference player.
Metzger was the Lords’ starting goalie and posted a 7.28 goals against average. He made 91 saves to go along with a .650 save percentage. At a national level, his goals against average was the ninth best output among all NCAA Division III goalies who logged 400 minutes or more. Even more impressive, among that same group of netminders, Metzger's save percentage ranked third. He was an USILA All-America honorable mention and was a first team All-North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) selection.
Russell was Kenyon’s face-off specialist. Like Metzger, he was voted a first team All-NCAC player. He played in all seven games for the 6-1 Lords and registered a .641 winning percentage (98-of-153) at the square. His 98 wins were tied for third most among all conference players, and his win percentage ranked 33rd among all players in NCAA Division III. Russell also led the Lords in ground balls (47) and tacked on two caused turnovers and one assist to his 2021 stat line.
Courtney gains second All-Region honor
For the second time in his collegiate career, Lawrence Courtney, a recent Kenyon College graduate, was named to a Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) NCAA Division III PING All-Region Team.
The GCAA breaks the nation into six regions, and Courtney was one of 15 players selected to the All-Great Lakes Region Team. He previously was selected to the All-Great Lakes Team in 2018.
During the abbreviated 2021 season, Courtney played five rounds and registered a trio of top-five finishes, while concluding the season with a 75.60 scoring average. During the North Coast Athletic Conference Championship, Courtney was voted the conference’s Dick Gordin Player of the Year.
Throughout his Kenyon career, Courtney piled up two All-NCAC honors, two GCAA All-Region honors and a GCAA All-America Scholar award. In 2018, he qualified, as an individual, for the NCAA Division III Championship and was a semifinalist for the 2018 NCAA Division III Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year Award.
Hosmer-Quint earns Academic All-America status
After being selected to an Academic All-District team one month ago, Kenyon College student-athlete Sam Hosmer-Quint made a big jump forward Wednesday, as the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced that he made the cut for the 2020-21 Academic All-America men’s soccer team.
Hosmer-Quint, who was a CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree both this season and in the 2018 season, became the first Kenyon men’s soccer player to reach the Academic All-America level since Henry Myers did so in 2017. With his name now added to the slate, Hosmer-Quint is the fifth Lords soccer player, over the last seven seasons, to be named Academic All-America.
To meet eligibility requirements, a nominee had to be at least of sophomore standing and had to possess at least a 3.3 cumulative grade point average. Additionally, a nominee had to be voted to his respective Academic All-District first team.
For the 2020-21 academic year, CoSIDA broke its Academic All-America men’s soccer selections into three teams. Hosmer-Quint was voted to the 11-man second team. Because the 2020 fall campaign was wiped out by the pandemic, CoSIDA tentatively adjusted selection criteria to be based on career accomplishments, rather than just current season accomplishments.
A defender, Hosmer-Quint was integral in the Lords posting a combined 53-6-8 record over his first three seasons of play. That span included three North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) titles and appearances in three NCAA Division III Tournaments. It also featured a defense that held opponents to a combined average of just 0.66 goals per game.
Hosmer-Quint was impactful in the offensive zone, too. In 54 career games played, he scored five goals and dished out four assists.
Hughes added to Lords lacrosse staff
Kenyon College head coach Doug Misarti recently announced the hiring of C.J. Hughes, who will join the Lords lacrosse staff this summer in preparation for the 2022 season.
Hughes, a native of Cincinnati, arrives at Kenyon after spending his collegiate playing days at NCAA Division III Capital University in Bexley, Ohio. As part of the Crusaders program, Hughes was a three-time team captain who piled up career numbers that included 192 goals, 88 assists and 280 points. His assist total was an all-time record at Capital and both his goal and point totals ranked second best in program history. Additionally, he holds Capital single-season records for points (94) and assists (31).
Hughes started his coaching path in the summer of 2020, working as a coach at Headlines Lacrosse Club in Cincinnati. He’s also worked as a camp director at the Southern Ohio Shootout since 2016 and has held coaching and leadership positions with I9 Sports in Columbus, as well as held clinics and private lessons for youth and high school levels in the Bexley area.
Hughes graduated from Capital in May 2021 with a bachelor’s degree in biology and is currently working on becoming a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialists (CSCS) by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).
