MOUNT VERNON – Mount Vernon’s Ben Bridges fired a 3-under par 69 on the second day of the two-day Battle at Chapel Hill to finish 1-under for the tournament, which took place on Tuesday and Wednesday at Chapel Hill Golf Course.
Bridges found his stroke down the stretch on the back nine with birdies on 14, 15 and 16. He followed that up with five birdies on the second day to finish second behind Dublin’s Sheil Iyer, who shot a 3-under 141 for the tournament to beat out 40 other players in the boys 16-18 age group.
Also competing in boys 16-18 were Marengo’s Emerson Grassbaugh and Mount Vernon’s Ben Bridges. Grassbaugh, who finished with a two-day total of 162, improved by 10 strokes on the second. He finished strong with birdies on 17 and 18. Bridges finished with a two-day total of 176, closing his tournament with a birdie on 18.
Will Streby of Mount Vernon had a solid first day in the boys 13-15 age group. He fired a 77, holing a birdie on 7 to highlight his effort. He finished with a two-day total of 161 to finish fourth behind Worthington’s Jack Flores (146) in the 33-player field.
Centerburg’s Amaiah Gammel and Somi Bright competed in the girls 13-18 age group. Both improved their scores on the second day with Gammell shooting a 101 to finish with a two-day score of 206, and Bright shot a 105 to finish at 215. Hilliard’s Aimee Hayes (166) beat out the 10-player field.
