Hayden Higgins gave the Mount Vernon OrangeSox 14U baseball team all the runs they needed with a two-run double in the second inning.
But the OrangeSox exploded for 14 runs in the seventh to run away with a 17-1 win over host Highland on Monday, April 19.
The win came three days after the OrangeSox overcame an early three-run deficit with a four-run third inning to win 11-6 over visiting Highland.
In Monday’s contest, Higgins started the seventh-inning rally with a leadoff triple and scored on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, Caden Theibert cleared the bases with a three-run triple, and Isaiah Campbell added a two-run double.
Theibert, Luke Hubbard and Kayden Packard, in relief of Camden Firebaugh, combined to allow just one hit over the final four innings of play. Packard struck out two over two scoreless innings, and Firebaugh allowed one earned run over the first three innings for the OrangeSox.
Higgins, Quinten Rowland and Ethan Yost each had two hits to lead the OrangeSox on offense.
Sam Hernandez and Hunter Taylor had two hits apiece to lead Highland. Hernandez hit a double in the third inning that drove in Jacob Garber, who had singled earlier in the inning.
Hubbard also came through big in Friday’s game. He hit the game-tying single in the third inning, stole second and gave the OrangeSox a 5-4 lead after scoring on a wild pitch.
Theibert hit an RBI single and Higgins followed with a two-run double to give the OrangeSox some breathing room at 11-6.
Wes Neighbarger was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a run scored, and Firebaugh and Zac Clow each drove in a pair of runs. Clow tossed two scoreless innings, allowing a walk while striking out two to lead the OrangeSox on the mound.
Lincoln Shaffer had two hits and two runs to lead Highland.
