Casey Bunner shot a 160 and finished seventh to lead the Mount Vernon Nazarene women’s golf team at the Bethel Invitational on Friday and Saturday, April 9–10, at Blackhorn Golf Club in South Bend, Indiana.

Peyton Broce (164) finished in a three-way tie for 10th out of 63 to back Bunner for the Cougars.

Emily Wilson (175), Katie Bruursema (178) and Kate Von Hansdorf (185) rounded out the scorers for MVNU (673), which finished fifth out of 13 teams, behind winner Bethel (633).

 

BASEBALL

MVNU had a flare for the dramatic in a four-game sweep over visiting Grace in Crossroads League play over the weekend. The Cougars won two walk-offs and had another game decided in the late innings.

Blaine Keener found the right spot between short and third to drive home Nick Rosetti in a 4-3 walk-off victory for the Cougars in the opener on Saturday, April 10, in Mount Vernon.

Jake Glover followed with a game-winning double in the ninth to send MVNU to a 3-2 win over the Lancers in Saturday’s second game.

Aaron Saal had two hits — a homer and a double — and drove in four runs to lead the Cougars (21-13, 11-13) to a 9-8 victory over Grace in the first game on Friday, April 9.

He added three more hits including a homer to lead MVNU to an 8-4 win over the Lancers (9-24, 6-18) in Friday’s second game.

Saal is batting .426 with nine homers and 43 RBIs to lead the Cougars, who have run off six consecutive wins.

 

CROSS COUNTRY

Morgan Forney earned All-American honors at the NAIA cross country national meet on Friday, April 9, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Forney ran a time of 18 minutes, 32.69 seconds to finish 35th out of 326 runners in the women’s 5K. The top 40 finishers earned All-American honors.

Garrett Gemmaka also represented MVNU, finishing with a time of 28:45 to finish 283rd out 317 runners.

 

TRACK AND FIELD

Missy Emery and Terril Skinner each had third-place finishes to lead MVNU at the Walsh Invitational on Thursday and Friday, April 8–9, in North Canton.

Emery took third in the 100-meter dash (12.62) and Skinner took third in the 110-meter hurdles (15.31).

Kasey Keith was also solid for the Cougars with a fifth-place finish in the shot put (13.10). She took sixth in the discus (39.43 meters) and eighth in the hammer throw (42.07).

Liam Neer was fourth in the 400-meter (51.39); and Kyler Dickey, Luke Couchman and Clayton Slemmons each placed fifth in their respective events: the shot put (15.31), the 100-meter dash (11.25) and the 800-meter run (1:57.26).

Kaylin Shackelford was ninth in the 800-meter (2:30.15).

 

MEN’S GOLF

Brandon Main and Brock Detmer each shot two-day scores of 146 to lead MVNU at Ohio Dominican University’s Bill Blazer Classic on Friday and Saturday, April 9–10, at Turnberry Golf Course in Pickerington.

Main and Detmer both finished in a six-way tie for ninth out of 54 golfers.

Dylan Errington (154), Jordan Hoag (158) and Michael Hahn (169) rounded out MVNU’s “A” team, which posted an overall score of 604 to finish sixth out of 10 teams, behind winner and host ODU (575).

The Cougars’ “B” team of Riley Wilcoxon (154), Thad Weaver (156), Austin Goodwill (160), Jesse Brunton (170) and Nate Davis (183) finished with a 640 total to place 10th.
