Adam Goodpaster tossed six innings of relief to pick up a win, helping the Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team to a split of four games at Huntington in Crossroads League play over the weekend.

Goodpaster tossed the final six innings, allowing one earned run on six hits and a walk with six strikeouts to help the Cougars hold off host Huntington 5-4 to cap the weekend.

Jake Glover, who started the game on the mound, hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning that ended up being the game-winner.

The fifth inning was also the charm in a 4-3 Cougar victory in seven innings on Friday, April 2. MVNU plated three runs, with the game-winner coming on a Toby Walker triple.

Josh Pettit went the front six innings, allowing two runs (both earned) on eight hits with four strikeouts to get the win for the Cougars (16-13, 7-13).

Huntington jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings en route to a 10-6 victory to open the series on Friday. Daniel Lichty and Satchell Wilson each collected four hits and drove in three runs to lead the Foresters (20-8, 13-7).

Huntington rallied for four runs in the fourth inning and five more in the fifth to run away with a 14-5 victory in Saturday’s opener.

Wilson went 5-for-5, scoring four runs and driving in two to lead the Foresters in the win.

Stanley, Ewers, Matsumoto receive All-WHAC honors

MVNU men’s volleyball player Spencer Stanley wrapped up his freshman year with three All-Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference honors.

Stanley was named first-team all-conference, Newcomer of the Year and part of the all-freshman team. The Mount Vernon High School graduate led the team with 231 kills and 3.5 kills per set. He also had 100 digs.

Landon Ewers and Jaysen Matsumoto were also honored for their stellar freshman campaigns by being named to the league’s all-freshman team. Ewers, a Mount Vernon High School graduate, tied for the league league with 25 solo blocks and added 16 assisted blocks. He finished second on the team with 154 kills.

Matsumoto was third in the WHAC with 612 assists and second on the team with 162 digs.

MVNU coach Doug Sherer was awarded the Champions of Character Coach Award. The award is given to the coach who exemplifies the five core values of respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship.

Freshman Caden Donaldson was named to the Champions of Character team, and senior Levi Weaver and junior Tommy Tutolo were named to the all-academic team.

Kenyon Athletics extends ‘quiet period’

Kenyon has announced its ‘quiet period’ will extend through Friday, April 9, because of a continued increase in positive COVID-19 tests.

The school canceled last week’s events because of 10 positive tests and extended it through this week because of 10 additional positive tests.

Sports impacted this weekend were baseball at home against Allegheny, golf at Allegheny, men’s lacrosse at home against Allegheny, women’s lacrosse at Allegheny, softball at home against Allegheny, men’s and women’s tennis at Case Western Reserve and volleyball at Wooster. All were scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 3.

Women’s tennis at home against Denison on Tuesday, April 6; men’s lacrosse at home against Hiram, women’s lacrosse at Denison and men’s tennis at home against Denison on Wednesday, April 7; and golf at home against Ohio Wesleyan and softball at Hiram on Thursday, April 8, will not be played as scheduled. Non-conference games are canceled, but NCAC games will have the opportunity to be rescheduled.

Eight contests are scheduled for Saturday, April 10.

SOFTBALL

Sheridan Sullivan kept up her stellar season by notching a pair of complete-game victories over the weekend as MVNU swept Taylor on Friday, April 2, before splitting with Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday, April 3, in Crossroads League play.

Sullivan struck out eight batters in a one-hit, six-inning 8-0 shutout in the Cougars’ opening win at Taylor on Friday in Upland, Indiana. She followed that up by allowing one run over five innings in a 3-1 victory over Indiana Wesleyan in Game 2 on Saturday in Marion, Indiana.

Sullivan’s effort earned her Crossroads League Pitcher of the Week for the second consecutive week. Her 0.60 ERA and .150 batting average against are tops in the league.

Maddison Ruhl hit a two-run single in the seventh inning to give the Cougars the lead in a 7-5 victory in seven innings in Game 2 at Taylor.

Macee Marcum tossed 2 1/3 innings of scoreless, hitless ball to get the win in relief.

The Wildcats scored six runs in the third inning and followed up with eight runs in the fourth to run away with a 14-1 five-inning win in Game 1. Kamryn Buck, Miranda Wehrle and Aubrie Eckert each hit home runs for IWU in the win.

 

WOMEN’S GOLF

Peyton Broce shot a two-day score of 159 to lead MVNU to a third-place finish out of nine teams at the Purgatory Intercollegiate, hosted by Taylor University on Friday and Saturday, April 2–3, in Noblesville, Indiana.

Casey Brunner (165), Katie Bruursema (168), Emily Wilson (171) and Kate Van Hansdorf (189) backed Broce, who finished tied for sixth out of 51 players. The Cougars (663) finished behind the host Trojans (628) and Wayland Baptist (646).

 

MEN’S GOLF

Dylan Errington and Brandon Main each put up solid scores to lead MVNU at the Lawrence Tech Invitational on Friday and Saturday, April 2–3, at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois.

Errington shot a two-day score of 154 to finish tied for 15th out of 90 players. Main was close behind with a 156, which tied him for 25th. Jordan Hoag (165), Thad Weaver (170) and Riley Wilcoxon (170) rounded out the Cougars, who scored a 642 and finished 11th out of 16 teams, behind winner Faulkner (607).

 

TRACK AND FIELD

Micah Tuggle took first place in the men’s shot put to lead MVNU at the George Glass Invitational on Saturday, April 3, in Upland, Indiana.

Tuggle won the event with a toss of 14.42 meters and also claimed seventh in the discus (40.18). The meet was not scored as a team meet.

The 4x400-meter relay team (3:38.89) of Marvell Connor, Luke Couchman, Colin Gaines and Liam Near placed sixth; and Clayton Slemmons was 10th in the 800-meter run (1:59.21) for the Cougar men’s team.

Makayla Roberts was seventh in the women’s shot put (11.56) and Kaylin Shackelford was ninth in the 800-meter (2:28.11) to lead the MVNU women’s team.
