MOUNT VERNON – The world of medical literature is filled with stories of how our canine companions can lift our spirits, and that’s true of one of The Laurels of Mount Vernon’s honored visitors, Electra.

Electra belongs to Dr. McEldowney, a staff physician at The Laurels, and there seems to be no shortage of goodwill this furry companion has built up among the guests.

“Our guests love this sweet dog,” said Sonjia Allonas, activities director at The Laurels of Mount Vernon. “She has been very dedicated in visiting our residents and putting smiles on their faces.”

But Electra is not The Laurels’ only special animal visitor. The Easter Bunny hopped in on Sunday to give guests Easter bags and eggs and visited with each resident.

“The smiles on our residents’ faces where priceless,” Allonas said.

These milestones stand out all the more because visits have been restricted during the pandemic. Allonas noted that coping with the new precautions has been a group effort.

“I would also like to make a point to mention the great effort that all of the staff has put in prior to and during COVID-19 by being team players,” she said. “The activity staff as well as all of the other staff have been amazing and continue to strive to keep our residents happy.”

Upcoming events include a hula hoop contest on April 12 and preparations for National Nursing Home Week in May.
