Alexa Skal provided the offense with two goals to lead the host Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s soccer team to a 2-0 win over Point Park (Pennsylvania) in non-conference play on Saturday, March 27, in Mount Vernon.

Skal gave the Cougars (10-6) the lead on a goal in the 18th minute, assisted by Sarah Townsend. She scored her second goal off a pass by Ashley Townsend in the 69th minute.

Ella Serlin had 11 saves in goal for the Pioneers (8-6).

 

BASKETBALL

MVNU’s Taylor Gregory and Jevon Knox each received All-American status on Friday, March 26.

Gregory; who averaged 14.8 points, 9.8 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game; was named third-team All-NAIA after helping the Cougar women’s team to a 17-12 record and an appearance in the NAIA tournament in the Round of 16.

Knox averaged 21.2 points per game, shot 50% from the floor and 44.7% from three-point range, and added 4.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists to land NAIA honorable mention honors. Knox helped the MVNU men’s team to a 9-13 overall record and a 7-9 mark in Crossroads League play.

 

SOFTBALL

Freshman Sheridan Sullivan continued her solid season in the circle, helping MVNU to a pair of doubleheader sweeps over the weekend.

Sullivan went a complete eight innings, allowing one run (earned) on four hits with eight strikeouts, but took the tough-luck 1-0 loss against Saint Francis in Crossroads League play on Friday, March 26, in Mount Vernon.

Kaycee Ollis led MVNU with three hits in the Game 1 loss to Saint Francis.

Sullivan came back on Saturday, March 27, to hold host and sixth-ranked Marian (20-6, 9-1) to seven hits and four walks in a 1-0 win in the second game of a doubleheader in Indianapolis. She had five strikeouts in the win.

Megan Pentz hit a walk-off, two-run single to give MVNU (6-4, 4-4) a 2-1 victory over Saint Francis (6-12, 4-4) in the second game on Friday. Hannah Barco allowed one earned run on four hits with three strikeouts to get the win.

Kylee Matern, Maddison Ruhl and Macee Marcum each had two hits, but MVNU fell 6-2 in the second game at Marian on Saturday.

 

BASEBALL

Kasson Krownapple hit an RBI single to tie it, and Nick Rosetti scored on an error to end it as host MVNU parlayed a walk-off win in the opener into a doubleheader sweep over Marian on Saturday, March 27.

The Cougars (13-14, 4-11) took four games in two days over the Knights in Crossroads League play.

Andrew Miller hit a three-run, walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to help the Cougars to a sweep of Marian on Friday, March 26, in Mount Vernon. He finished 4-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs to lead the Cougars to a 16-13 win in the second game against the Knights.

Jake Glover was solid with a home run and three runs batted in to lead the Cougars to a 12-2 eight-inning victory over Marian (16-13, 9-6) in the first game on Friday. Casey Kalman was 4-for-4 with three RBIs and a run in the opener.

Glover had four hits and drove in four runs to lead the Cougars to a 12-11 win in the Saturday opener. He also hit a home run in the second game on Saturday as MVNU outslugged the Knights 13-7. The Cougars scored four runs in the first and four more in the second to create distance.

Aaron Saal went 3-for-3 with three runs and a couple of RBIs. Glover had two hits, two runs and two RBIs.

 

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

MVNU’s Spencer Stanley continued his hot hitting with another 20-kill performance, but 14th-ranked Siena Heights proved to be too much for the Cougars in a 25-19, 25-23, 15-25, 25-23 win in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play on Saturday, March 27, at Ariel Arena in Mount Vernon.

It was the second straight 20-kill performance for Stanley, who set a career high with 29 kills in the Cougars’ previous match at Goshen. Stanley added 13 digs to his ledger against the Saints.

Caden Donaldson had 16 kills and nine digs; Jaysen Matsumoto had 48 assists, 19 digs and two aces; Daniel Skryzpchak had 13 digs; and Landon Ewers had six solo blocks and an assisted block to lead the Cougars (8-10, 4-8).

Kevin Gomez had 18 kills, Bryce Johnson had 15 kills, Keegan Crawford had 40 assists and 12 digs, Joudiel Poveymirow had 24 digs and Jakob Pickett had six blocks to lead the Saints (11-6, 7-5).

 

TRACK AND FIELD

Kasey Keith set a personal record with a throw of 13.94 meters to finish third in the women’s shot put, and Kyler Dickey finished fourth in the men’s shot put with a throw of 16.24 meters to lead the MVNU track and field team at the Yellow Jacket Collegiate Open on Saturday, March 27, in Cedarville.

Alex Janney (57.45 seconds) was seventh in the 400-meter hurdles, Clayton Slemmons (1:59.71) was eighth in the 800-meter run, Liam Neer (51.45) was 15th in the 400-meter run and Mike Tuggle (13.52) was 11th in the shot put to lead the men’s team, which finished 13th out of 24 teams.

Kaylin Shackelford (2:27.18) placed 12th in the 800-meter run and Missy Emery (12.74) was 13th in the 100-meter dash to lead the women’s team, which finished 13th out of 21 teams.
