Freshman Sheridan Sullivan tossed a five-inning no-hitter to help MVNU salvage a split of a doubleheader against Bethel in Crossroads League play on Tuesday, March 23, in Mount Vernon.
Sullivan struck out 10 batters and surrendered just one walk in the Cougars’ 13-0 win over the Pilots in the second game of a twin bill.
Bethel (7-16, 2-6) won the first game 5-3.
In the second game, Kylee Matern and Macee Marcum paced the offense with three hits apiece. Marcum pounded a triple, scored three times and drove in two; while Matern doubled, scored twice and drove in a pair of runs.
MVNU took control with a seven-run first inning.
In the first game, Quinn Slattman had a solo home run and Emmie Pugh hit an RBI single in a two-run third inning to help the Pilots take control.
Marcum and Maddison Ruhl had three hits and an RBI each for the Cougars (4-2, 4-2). Ruhl also scored a run.
BASEBALL
The bats were alive and well for MVNU in a doubleheader sweep over Cleary (Michigan) on Tuesday, March 23, in Mount Vernon. MVNU belted out 23 hits over the two-game series, winning 8-3 and 8-2.
Jake Glover hit a two-run single as part of a five-run first inning to help the Cougars take control in the opener. Glover finished with three RBIs, and Andrew Miller added two hits and scored a couple of runs to pace MVNU (10-11).
Logan Fox allowed one run (earned) on eight hits with six strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings to pick up the victory on the mound.
Jesse Fishbaum had three hits and Nic Olsen drove in two runs to lead Cleary.
Aaron Saal launched a three-run homer in the fifth inning of Game 2 to help MVNU put it out of reach. He ended up with three hits and three runs to pace the Cougars.
Luke Tucker picked up the win, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits and a walk with one strikeout over four innings.
Aaron Dyke had three hits for Cleary (6-14) in Game 2.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Spencer Stanley had little trouble finding space, leading MVNU with 29 kills and four blocks; but the Cougars came up short in a five-set marathon, falling to Goshen 25-23, 20-25, 25-22, 20-25, 15-10 in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play on Tuesday, March 23, in Goshen, Indiana.
Caden Donaldson and Landon Ewers backed Stanley with 17 and 13 kills, respectively.
Jaysen Matsumoto dished out 56 assists and added 14 digs, three assisted blocks and a pair of aces; Daniel Skrzypchak had 13 digs; Donaldson added 12 digs and Ewers assisted on three blocks for the Cougars (8-9, 4-7).
Alexander Rabadzhiev had 28 kills and nine digs, Michael Wahl had 46 assists and eight digs, and Ian Fox had a solo block and assisted on seven others to pace the Maple Leafs (14-8, 6-5).
