Moses Magens’ hat trick helped the Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s soccer team overcome an early deficit in a 4-3 win over Indiana University East on Wednesday, March 10, in Mount Vernon.

Trevor Lenke scored less than a minute into the game to give IUE an early 1-0 lead.

Magens scored his first goal a little more than four minutes in to tie the score 1-1. His second goal gave the Cougars (7-4) a 2-1 lead.

Joshua Sitney scored in the 68th minute, a mere two and a half minutes after the Red Wolves knotted the score, giving MVNU the lead for good at 3-2.

Iran Masis found Magnes for a goal that turned out to be the game winner in the 84th minute.

Gustavo Ferrari scored two second half goals, including one in the 85th minute to pull the Red Wolves (0-6) within one, but MVNU held on.

Joshua Dunn stopped five shots in goal for the Cougars, while Aaron Gipson had five saves for the Red Wolves.

MEN’S LACROSSE

Brett Townsend had a goal and an assist — both in the third quarter — to lead MVNU, which scored three goals in the frame to take the lead. But Taylor scored three unanswered goals in the fourth to take a 7-5 victory over the Cougars on Wednesday, March 10, in Mount Vernon.

Johnny Grumney scored two goals and Joshua Hageman had 11 saves in goal to lead the Cougars (1-4).

Emmit Wintek and Wyatt Marshall scored two goals each, and Teegan Heiniger had a goal and two helpers to lead the Trojans (4-2). All three had goals in the final period to lift Taylor to the win.

Nathanael Love had 15 saves for the Trojans.

BASEBALL

The bats came alive for MVNU, which scored 25 runs over two games in a doubleheader sweep over Cincinnati-Clermont on Tuesday, March 9, in Mount Vernon.

Aaron Saal was a big part of the Cougar offense. The senior drove in eight runs on the day, including six in Game 1 — four on a grand slam in the second inning that put MVNU on top for good in a 10-7 victory in seven innings.

In the second game, the Bearcats scored five runs in the top of the first inning. But MVNU came back with six in the bottom half and added three more in the second before running away with a 15-6 win.

Logan Fox went five innings and allowed six runs (five earned) on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts to get the win. Cruz McFadden worked one inning to get the save.

Jake Glover had three hits and three RBIs in the second game, and Saal had three hits and drove in two runs for the Cougars.

Bo Wilson had seven strikeouts to get the win for MVNU.
