Missy Emery, Alex Jenney and Kaitlin Meade each took first place in their respective events to lead the Mount Vernon Nazarene men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams to second-place finishes at the inaugural Chip Wilson Invite on Friday, Feb. 12, and Saturday, Feb. 13.
The invite was the first collegiate event hosted at the new Energy Fieldhouse at Mount Vernon High School.
The men’s team finished second with 118 points in the nine-team field, behind Walsh (167 points). The women’s team (144) also finished second out of nine teams, behind Walsh (185).
Emery led the way in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.21 seconds and added a second-place finish in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.17 seconds. Meade took first place in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 3:20.62.
Jenney won the 600-meter run with a time of 1:29.03, beating out teammates Isaac Ramseyer (1:30.05) and Jonathan Backus (1:30.45), who finished second and third, respectively.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Rylee Pireu hit on six of nine 3-pointers and scored 24 points to lead MVNU in an 89-59 win over Goshen in Crossroads League play on Saturday, Feb. 13, at Ariel Arena.
Pireu, who scored 10 points and added five rebounds in the Cougars’ win over St. Francis on Feb. 10, was named the league’s Athlete of the Week in women’s basketball.
The Cougars (13-9, 9-5) have won four consecutive games.
Maggie Coe had 15 points, four steals and three assists; and Taylor Gregory added 12 points, five rebounds and a pair of assists to back Pireu, who added three assists and three rebounds for MVNU.
TaNiece Chapman had 12 points, five rebounds and three assists; and Janara Flowers added 10 points to pace the Maple Leafs (7-18, 3-11).
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Kyle Kegley turned in a big performance on both ends of the floor to lead MVNU to a 98-68 win at Goshen in Crossroads League play on Saturday, Feb. 13, in Goshen.
Kegley posted a double-double with 22 points and 13 rebounds, and also added four blocks and three assists to lead the Cougars (8-10, 7-7).
Jevon Knox went for 20 points, seven rebounds and four assists; Clay Hilliard scored 18 points and dished out four assists; Eric McLaughlin had 13 points and five boards; and Kade Ruegsegger added 12 points and five rebounds for MVNU.
Tahj Curry scored a game-best 23 points and added eight rebounds and five assists, and Robert Sanders chipped in 12 points and four rebounds for the Maple Leafs (3-22, 0-14).
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Spencer Stanley’s well-rounded effort of 14 kills and 15 digs led MVNU to a 25-20, 25-17, 23-25, 25-22 victory over Siena Heights in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play on Friday, Feb. 12, in Adrian, Michigan.
Jaysen Matsumoto dished out 38 assists and added 12 digs, Luke Funte had four blocks, Landon Ewers added 12 kills and Daniel Skrzypchak had 10 digs for the Cougars (2-4, 2-4).
Alex Garavalia had 17 kills, and Joudiel Poveymirow went for 17 digs and three aces to pace Saints (0-1, 0-1).
BOWLING
The MVNU men’s bowling team set records in overall team score with 4,903 and an individual-game score with 1,125 in the Ohio Bowling Conference No. 2 at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl.
The Cougars, led by Cullen Rogan’s 258, placed them fifth out of 10 teams in the league event.
The women’s team also set a single-game record of 838 and finished eighth out of 11 teams with a score of 4,073.
