Jevon Knox became the sixth player in school history to record 2,000 career points during the Mount Vernon Nazarene men’s basketball team’s 97-76 victory over Point Park in non-conference action on Saturday, Feb. 6, at Ariel Arena.

Knox scored 20 points and added seven rebounds, reaching the milestone midway through the first half.

Clay Hilliard had 22 points and five assists, Kade Ruegsegger added 15 points and nine assists, and Eric McLaughlin added 10 points for the Cougars (7-9), who blew the game open with a 49-32 second half.

Jesse Calloway had 19 points; and Sherron Schifino went for 17 points, four assists and four rebounds to pace the Pioneers (5-7).

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

No stranger to double-doubles, Taylor Gregory had a doozy on Saturday, Feb. 6. The senior post posted 16 points and 20 rebounds to lead MVNU to a 62-44 win at Spring Arbor in Crossroads League play.

Maggie Coe had 13 points; and Rylee Pireu added 12 points, four boards and a pair of steals for MVNU (11-9, 7-5), which outscored Spring Arbor 35-18 in the second half.

Grace Shoobridge turned in a double-double of her own to pace Spring Arbor. She had 13 points, 10 rebounds, six blocks and three assists; Abi Borojevich added 11 points; and Teona Feldpausch had eight points, nine rebounds and a couple of assists.

Sage Brannon was solid off the bench for MVNU with five rebounds and five assists to go with five points.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Two quick goals were enough for Martin Methodist to spoil MVNU’s return to play. The Redhawks scored two goals in a span of a little over two minutes to down the Cougars 3-1 in a non-conference game on Saturday, Feb. 6, in Pulaski, Tennessee.

Mackenzie Stroebel scored the first goal off a Lily Fisk assist at the 19:54 mark of the first half. Just 128 seconds later, Yuki Watari found the back of the net to extend the lead to 2-0. Adisa Amang had the assist on Watari’s goal.

Amang added a goal in the second half, assisted by Estelle Badoedana Ekada. Gabby Kennedy stopped two shots in goal for the Redhawks (5-0).

Caitlin Erlandson scored the lone goal for the Cougars (6-6-2), and goalkeeper Lilly Jakuszewski had four saves.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Spencer Stanley had 13 kills, and Caden Donaldson added 10 kills and 15 assists, but MVNU fell in another five-set match as Aquinas (Mich.) took a 23-25, 25-18, 22-25, 25-22, 15-9 decision in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play on Saturday, Feb. 6, at Ariel Arena.

Julian Armendano and Gavin Jonker had 14 kills apiece to pace the Saints (2-3, 2-2). Leo-Paul Rousseau had 31 assists, Josh Evers had 16 digs, Armendano added 10 digs and Daniel Littleton had four blocks for Aquinas.

Jaysen Matsumoto had 44 assists and 12 digs, Daniel Skrzypciak had 18 digs and Donaldson added 15 digs for the Cougars (1-3, 1-3).

BOWLING

The MVNU women’s bowling team took sixth and the men’s team took seventh in the Muskie Mash on Saturday, Feb. 6, in Lancaster.

The Cougar women’s team finished with a score of 3,558 behind first-place Northwestern (Ohio), which led the eight-team field with 4,390. The men’s team (3,863) was seventh out of seven teams behind winner Robert Morris (4,965).

INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD

Garrett Gemmaka set a school record in one event and helped set a school record in another to lead the MVNU indoor track and field team at Indiana Wesleyan’s Midwest Classic on Friday, Feb. 5, and Saturday, Feb. 6; in Marion, Indiana.

Gemmaka set a record with a time of 2 minutes, 37.23 seconds in the 1,000-meter and finished fourth. He also was a part of the 4,000-meter distance-medley relay team with Clayton Slemmons, Luke Couchman and Colin Gaines that set a school record with a time of 10:31.86.

Kyler Dickey notched his second consecutive first-place finish in the shot put with a toss of 15.94 meters.

Slemmons (1:25.47) was also solid with a fourth-place finish in the 600-meter.

Kasey Keith (12.98) took third for the Cougars in the women’s shot put.

Morgan Forney (3:14.33) led the women’s track team with a fifth-place finish in the 1000-meter.

TENNIS

The MVNU men’s tennis team capped its weekend in Richmond, Kentucky, with a 4-3 victory over Shawnee State on Saturday, Feb. 6, to finish off a split.

The Cougars (3-9), who resumed their season with a 7-0 loss to Pikeville on Friday, Feb. 5, were led by Austin Faucett and Drew Jackson. Faucett and Jackson teamed to pick up a win in doubles action and also got victories in singles play. Logan Gauthier earned a victory in singles action as well and, along with Danny Mayotte, won in doubles play.

The women’s team was defeated in a pair of matches, falling to Pikeville 6-1 on Friday and Shawnee State 4-3 on Saturday.

Alyson Landis earned a victory on both days, winning in singles action against Pikeville and, along with Casey Clark, in doubles action against Shawnee State.
