Maggie Coblentz stole the ball with three seconds left to preserve a 58-56 victory for the Mount Vernon Nazarene women’s basketball team at St. Francis on Wednesday, Jan. 27; in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

The Crossroads League win is the third consective for MVNU (9-8, 6-4), which led by as much as 11 in the fourth quarter of a game in which it never trailed.

Cobblentz scored nine points and added five rebounds. The clinching steal was her only of the game.

Rylee Pireu had 19 points, three rebounds, three steals and three assists; and Taylor Gregory tallied a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds to go with three blocks. Maggie Coe chipped in 10 points for MVNU.

Elise Scaggs paced St. Francis (11-8, 5-5) with 19 points, five rebounds and three assists; Reganne Pate added nine points; and Cassidy Crawford and Meleah Leatherman each scored eight points. Leatherman pulled down seven rebounds and Crawford had five boards.

Alexis Thornton led with eight rebounds, five assists and three steals for St. Francis.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Jalan Mull’s basket with 26 seconds left gave visiting St. Francis all it needed in a 93-90 win over MVNU in Crossroads League action on Wednesday, Jan. 27, at Ariel Arena.

Mull’s basket gave St. Francis a 91-90 lead, and David Ejah added a pair of free throws with seven seconds left to account for the final score.

Jevon Knox’s game-tying bid was off the mark for MVNU.

Ejah scored 28 points and pulled down eight rebounds to lead St. Francis, who buried 16 3-pointers as a team to secure the win. Dan McKeeman and Lance Dollison scored 12 points apiece, Antwaan Cushingberry went for 11 points and 10 assists, and Mull added 10 points for St. Francis.

Knox led MVNU with 28 points and three rebounds, and Clay Hilliard was also strong with 26 points and four boards.

Kade Ruegsegger went for 13 points, eight assists and seven rebounds; and Kyle Kegley tallied 10 points, 11 rebounds, three blocks and a pair of steals for MVNU, which trailed by 10 points with 11:43 remaining before a 12-3 run closed the gap.

St. Francis used an 11-3 run to take a 47-44 lead at the half.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Landon Ewers had seven kills, and Spencer Stanley and Riley Barretto added six kills apiece, but MVNU was swept by sixth-ranked Lourdes University 25-20, 25-15, 25-19 in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play on Tuesday, Jan. 26, in Sylvania.

Jaysen Matsumoto dished out 19 assists and Barretto had four digs to lead the Cougars (1-1, 1-1).

Jeff Lam had 12 kills, Sawyer Schafer had 10 kills, Guga Heldrich had 17 digs and Ian Fields had 13 assists to pace the Gray Wolves (2-0, 1-0).
