The Mount Vernon wrestling team took two out of three at the Worthington Kilbourne quad on Saturday, Jan. 9, in Columbus.

Mount Vernon’s Dylan Hartman (106 pounds), Charlie Bell (113), Colton Spurgeon (120) and Gabe Shannon (138) all went 3-0 on the day in duals against the host Wolves, Cambridge and Lancaster.

The Yellow Jackets opened the day with a 78-6 win over Kilbourne, then defeated the Bobcats 75-18 before falling to the Golden Gales in the finale by a score of 45-30.

SWIMMING

The team of Skylar Hill, Anna Rhodeback, Rylee Jarosz and Bre McClusky were the highlight of Mount Vernon’s day at the Coschocton duals on Saturday, Jan. 9.

The relay team finished first in the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 2 minutes, 48.3 seconds; and third in the 400-meter freestyle with a time of 5:01.84.

The Yellow Jacket girls team went 3-2 on the day with wins over East Knox (90-4), Warsaw River View (82-65) and Stewart Federal Hocking (90-0). Mount Vernon fell to New Philadelphia (93.5-53.5) and Athens (86.5-58.5).

McClusky was also solid in the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 30.88 seconds and the 100-meter freestyle (1:09.25), finishing second in both events.

Additionally, Hill finished third in the 200-meter IM (2:54.95) and third in the 100-meter butterfly (1:19.85), and Jarosz was third in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:33.06).

The boys team was 2-3 on the day; with wins over Federal Hocking (62-24) and East Knox (68-0) and losses to River View (128-43), New Philadelphia (82-38) and Athens (101-33).

East Knox’s lone representative, Hiba Ezzarovali, competed in two events: the 50-meter freestyle (17th, 40.62) and the 100-meter freestyle (12th, 1:37.15).

BOWLING

Blake French led the Utica boys team to a pair of wins over Licking Valley in Licking County League play over the weekend.

French bowled a pair of 200 games and a 422 series to lead Utica to a 2,111-1,198 win on Monday, Jan. 11, at Park Lanes in Heath.

He rolled a 368 series in Utica’s 1,939-792 win over the Panthers on Saturday, Jan. 9, at Redskin Lanes in Utica.

Jordan Lacy posted a 368 series to lead the Utica girls team to a 1,735-986 win over the Panthers on Saturday.

Karen Lightle rolled a 352 series to lead Utica in Monday’s 1,321-1,121 win over Valley. Lacy was again solid with a 341 series.

Freddies sweep Crestline

Chase Keyes and Anna Krause highlighted Fredericktown’s effort in a sweep over Crestline on Friday, Jan. 8, at Trio Lanes in Fredericktown.

Keyes rolled the Freddies’ only 200-game with a 211 and finished with a 388 series to lead the boys team to a 1,983-1,731 victory.

Kraus rolled a 327 series to lead the girls team to a 1,702-1,634 win.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Riley Pireu scored 23 points, and Taylor Gregory had 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead Mount Vernon Nazarene University by host Goshen (Ind.) in Crossroads League play on Saturday, Jan. 9.

Maggie Coblentz also had 14 points and added six boards for the Cougars (5-7, 2-3), who took the lead for good with a 9-0 run late in the first quarter.

TaNiece Chapman had 16 points and eight rebounds, and Graysen Cockerham added 13 points and six boards to lead the Maple Leafs (3-11, 1-4).

MEN’S BASKETBALL

MVNU used a 29-4 run in the first half to take control before holding off visiting Goshen 73-65 on Saturday, Jan. 9, at Ariel Arena in Mount Vernon.

Clay Hilliard scored 20 points and added three assists; Jevon Knox went for 18 points, seven rebounds, six assists and a pair of steals; and Kade Ruegsegger added 11 points, four assists and two steals for the Cougars (3-5, 3-2), who led 46-24 at the half.

Tahj Curry led the Maple Leafs (3-14, 1-7) with 21 points, five rebounds and five steals; Austin Branagan had 17 points and seven boards; and Ryan Mansbarger added 16 points.
