Roundup: Yellow Jackets solid in first Holiday Indoor meet

The Granville boys indoor track and field team and the Huber Heights girls team took top honors at the first-ever Jackets Holiday Indoor meet on Tuesday, Dec. 29, and Wednesday, Dec. 30, at Energy Fieldhouse in Mount Vernon.

The two-day event featured representatives from 19 different schools around the state, including 12 who participated in both boys and girls competition.

The host Yellow Jackets finished eighth (30 points) out of 13 teams, behind Wayne (138) in girls action.

East Knox (10) was 13th and Highland (8) finished 13th.

Juliete Laracuente highlighted the Scots’ effort with a first-place finish in the high jump (5-02.00) and the triple jump (35-05.25), and a third-place finish in the long jump (17-03.75).

Alexis Eusey (32-06.50) finished second in the shot put for Highland.

Mount Vernon’s Anna Dinnen was sixth in the shot put (27-09.00) and the weight throw (24-05.00), Marissa Rutter had a fourth-place finish (10.94) in the 60-meter hurdles and Makena Laslo was sixth in the pole vault (14-05.00).

The Mount Vernon boys team was 14th (14 points) out of 17 teams, behind the Blue Aces (98).

The Scots (34) were eighth and Utica (3) finished 17th in boys competition.

Damion Blubaugh was third with a time of 23.99 and Erick Rhodeback was close behind with a 24.08 to finish fourth in the 200-meter run to lead the Jackets in boys action.

Hunter Bolton (10:48.72) earned a second-place finish in the 3200-meter run.

Nathan Streby finished third in the 800-meter run (2:04.83) and fifth in the 1600-meter run (4:52.88) for the Bulldogs.

WRESTLING

Three Fighting Scots and two Trojans earned top honors at the Highland Wrestling Invitational on Wednesday, Dec. 30, in Sparta.

Highland ended up second with 124.5 points behind Plymouth (135) in the seven-team event. Centerburg (50) was seventh.

Kaden Miller beat out teammate Bryce Schott to earn top honors in the 138-pound division for the Scots. Cody Matthews (160 pounds) and Triston Hinkle (195) also finished first in their respective weight divisions for Highland.

Donnell Marshall (152) and Ross Boyd (285) took top honors for Centerburg.

Other standouts for the Trojans included Charlie Sargent (220), who finished second; Tanner Hott (170) who was fourth; Caylan LeMaster (152), who finished fifth; and Mason Lanthorn (220), who was sixth.

Caleb Wetzel (126) was second; Matthew Scarbury (126), Eli Grandstaff (170) and Landon Pedigo (220) were third in their respective weight classes; Braden Lester (120) and Andrew Bellas (132) were fourth in their respective classes; Chandler Stevens (182) and Ethan Taylor (220) were fifth in their classes; Andrew Baker (182) was sixth and Damien Daniel (152) was seventh to highlight the event for Highland.

Jackets nab a pair of wins at Olentangy

Six different Yellow Jackets went undefeated on the day as Mount Vernon defeated Dublin Scioto 60-23 and host Olentangy 63-15 on Wednesday, Dec. 30, in Lewis Center.

Gabe Harmon, who went to 8-0 on the season, highlighted the effort in the 220-pound weight division.

Charlie Bell (113 pounds), Conner Lang (132), Gabe Shannon (138), Jesse Foster (195) and Nate Stradley (285) also made it through the day without defeat.
