Basketball roundup: Big 3rd quarter lifts Jackets to 1st win

The Mount Vernon boys basketball team used a 23-5 second quarter to take control on their way to a 55-43 win over Madison in Mansfield in Ohio Cardinal Conference play on Tuesday, Dec. 22.

Blake Meyer scored 20 points, Dayne Burgess added 13 points and Owynn Gleason chipped in 11 points on the strength of three 3-pointers to lead the Yellow Jackets (1-5, 1-3), who outscored Madison 41-17 in the second half.

Isaac Brooks had 16 points and Luke Pruitt added 10 points to lead the Rams (0-3, 0-2), who jumped out to a 17-5 lead after one quarter and led 26-14 at the break.

Centerburg 70, Cardington-Lincoln 67

Carter Jones scored six points in overtime to help Centerburg stay undefeated with a 70-67 victory over Cardington in Knox Morrow Athletic Conference play on Tuesday, Dec. 22.

Jones finished with 24 points to lead the Trojans (6-0, 6-0), who also got 17 points from Mckinnon Mead and 10 points from Levi Houck.

Cardington’s Trey Brininger rebounded a missed shot by Mead and sent an outlet pass to Avery Harper at half-court, and Harper went the rest of the way for a layup with one second left to force the extra period.

Harper poured in 30 points and Brininger added 20 for the Pirates (6-2, 4-2), who were down 47-42 after three quarters and 60-56 before Mason White knocked down a pair of free throws with 13.3 seconds remaining.

Centerburg got four 3-pointers by Jones, Houck, Mead and Landon Griffith in the second quarter as it built a 37-26 lead at the break.

The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Pirates, who won a double-overtime thriller over East Knox in their previous league game on Dec. 18.
