Roundup: Green Wave outlasts Utica, 53-38

Host Utica held Newark Catholic to just three points in the opening period. But the Green Wave found their footing offensively and cruised to a 53-38 win in Licking County League play on Friday, Dec. 4.

Brandon Buchanan scored a game-high 19 points and Cole Canter added 16 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter to help Newark Catholic (2-0, 1-0) pull away.

Zach Heckman knocked down three 3-pointers and scored 13 points and Seth Cooper added nine points to lead Utica (1-2, 0-1).

Fredericktown 72, Cardington-Lincoln 52

Lincoln Cunningham had a near-perfect night from the field, scoring 30 points to lead the Freddies to a 72-52 win over the Pirates in KMAC play in Cardington on Friday, Dec. 4.

Cunningham was a perfect 4-for-4 from 3-point range and shot 10 of 11 from the field and 6 of 6 at the foul line. He added six rebounds to lead Fredericktown (2-0, 1-0).

Caleb Sheriff had 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists; Thomas Caputo added 14 points, four rebounds and three steals and Ty Hatfield dished out seven assists and had three steals to go with five points for the Freddies.

Avery Harper led Cardington (1-1, 0-1) with 15 points, Nate Hickman added 11 points and three assists and Zach Lester chipped in 10 points and six rebounds.

Ashland 84, Mount Vernon 71

Mount Vernon and Ashland got off to a fast start, tied 28-28 after one quarter. But visiting Ashland created distance in the second quarter and rolled to an 84-71 victory over the Yellow Jackets in Ohio Cardinal Conference play at the Hive on Friday, Dec. 4.

Luke Denbow went for 28 points, Grayson Steury added 21 points and Eli White scored 15 points to lead Ashland (2-0, 1-0).

Blake Meyer scored 26 points, Nolan Belcher added 16 points and Owynn Gleason chipped in 15 points to lead Mount Vernon (0-1, 0-1) in its season-opener.

Mount Gilead 63, Danville 50

Elijah Chafin scored all of 15 points in the first half to lead visiting Mount Gilead to a 63-50 win at Danville in KMAC play on Friday, Dec. 4.

Paul Butterman had 13 points for MG (1-1, 1-0), which took control with a 14-4 second quarter.

Wyatt Weckesser scored 11 points and Cam Miller added 10 points to lead the Blue Devils (0-2, 0-1).

Boys bowling

Mike Blake rolled a 237 game and a 414 series and Silas Horton added 408 series on the strength of a 225 game to lead host Cardington to a 2,234-1,754 win over Fredericktown in KMAC play at Morrow Lanes on Thursday, Dec. 3.

Justin Zollars rolled a 340 series and Billy Woodring added a 334 series to lead the Freddies.

Highland 2,014, East Knox 1,519

Tyler Disbennett rolled a pair of 200 games to finish with a 438 series to lead the Scots to a 2,014-1,519 win over the Bulldogs in KMAC play on Friday, Dec. 5 at Colonial City.

Will Jensen led East Knox with a 366 series.

Girls bowling

Grace McMahan rolled a 362 series to lead Fredericktown to a 1,740-1,649 win over Cardington in KMAC play at Morrow Lanes on Thursday, Dec. 3.

Peyton Goodman rolled a game-high 244 and finished with a 416 series to lead the Pirates.

Note: The East Knox and Highland girls match, also scheduled for Friday, Dec. 5, was postponed to Dec. 23 at 4 p.m.
