MARYSVILLE – Mount Vernon put in a strong and steady performance, battling gusty winds at the OHSAA Division I sectional golf championship at Darby Creek Golf Course on Oct. 6.

Although no one from Mount Vernon qualified for districts, Yellow Jackets’ senior Carter Carpenter placed 35th out 72 golfers with a score of 86. He lead his team to an 11th place finish (352 points) out of 14 teams.

Carpenter had his biggest trouble on the par-3 holes: three, seven, 11 and 16. He battled crosswinds on the eighth and went into the teeth of the wind on 18, but he made par on both.

“It was nice to finish with a par,” Carpenter said. “It did come to mind that these are my last four shots (in high school) and they were a little more special than any others I hit.”

Mount Vernon sophomore Ben Bridges shot an 88, leaving him in a tie with three other golfers for 38th among individuals. Teammates Byron Justice (a senior) and junior Beau Bridges both shot 89s and were right behind him, tied for 42nd. Senior Mason Boatwright was 48th, shooting a 90.

“It was a strong field,” Jackets’ coach Anthony Savage said. “We struggled a lot today. It was a tough course and the winds were probably 10-15 mph and pretty steady all day.”

Luke Gutman (71) of St. Charles was the top scorer, leading his school to the best team score of the day at 297. Gutman qualified for district along with his team. Paari Kaviyarasu of Thomas Worthington shot a par-72, making him the top individual district qualifier. Also qualifying for the districts were Grove City (313), Upper Arlington (315) and Olentangy Berlin (315), along with individuals Noah Jackman (73) of Thomas Worthington, Carson Trafford (73) of Watterson and Jack Gawronski  (77) of Dublin Scioto.

Highland's Emerson Grassbaugh saw his season come to a close on Oct. 8 at the Division II district tournament at Denison Golf Club in Granville.

Grassbaugh, the only Scot at the district round, shot a 90 to finish tied for 24th out of 36 golfers.

Only one team and one individual not on the qualifying team advanced to the state tournament on Oct. 16-17 at Ohio State's Scarlett Course. Columbus Academy (305) beat out five other teams and Northridge's Ross Teeter shot a 72 to move on to the next round.

Division III district tournament

Landon Griffith shot an 86 and Dalton Hall and Dallas Cornett each shot 87s for Centerburg in the Division III district tournament on Oct. 8 at Denison Golf Club in Granville.

Will Streby shot an 85 and Ian Muka a 90 for Fredericktown, Northmor's Grant Bentley also shot a 90 and Mount Gilead's Steven Street shot a 97 to finish behind Wellington's Carsten Judge.
