Roundup: Main, Marsell, Savage win top honors at Knox County Open

Brandon Main and Andy Marsell shared the Knox County Open championship, and Doug Savage took home top honors in the senior flight for the second consecutive year with a 71 on Oct. 4 at Hiawatha Golf Course in Mount Vernon.

It was Marsell’s fourth time winning top honors and Main’s first.

Brad Crouch finished third with an 83 and Randi Muka rounded out the group with an 87.

The first flight was won by Jim Dye with an 80, followed by Kyle Clinedinst (85) and Mike Beheler (87).

Corey Beach took top honors in the second flight with an 83. Four players tied for second place with scores of 90: Jimmy Dowell, Walt Kelling, JD Orr and Keith Sprochi. Damien Mazza (92) finishing third.

Brad Leach (84) won the third flight, followed by Tom Knight (85) and Joe Adrian (87).

In the senior flight, Savage beat out Larry Payne (73) and Ed O’Connell (85).

GIRLS GOLF

Utica’s Olivia Dickson turned in a consistent performance in the Division II district tournament on Oct. 5 at Darby Creek Golf Course in Marysville.

The freshman shot a 54 on the front nine and followed it up with a 54 on the back nine to finish with a 108 for the round, placing 32nd out of 36 golfers.

Only one team and one individual not on the qualifying team advanced to the state tournament, which is Oct. 16-17 at The Ohio State University’s Gray course.

Columbus School for Girls shot 364 as a team, and Newark Catholic’s Anna Crumrine won top honors with a 79, to advance.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Highland saw its perfect season come to an end in a four-set loss at Watkins Memorial. The host Warriors handed the Scots their first set defeat of the campaign in the opening frame and went on to win a 28-26, 25-19, 23-25, 27-25 thriller in non-league play on Oct. 3 in Pataskala.

Kendall Stover, Zoya Winklefoos and Makenna Belcher were solid in the setback for Highland.

Belcher had 16 kills, 14 digs and three aces; Winkelfoos had 25 assists, eight digs and four aces and Stover had 14 kills, 12 digs and three aces to lead the Scots (16-1). Ashlynn Belcher was also solid with 15 assists, eight kills and eight digs.

Jenna Lucas had 22 kills, assisted on 10 blocks and added eight digs and Isabella Weiler had 16 kills, 10 digs and assisted on six blocks to lead Watkins (17-1). Elise Adelman had 52 assists and eight digs, Alex Stoat had 16 digs, Malaina Vatter had 11 kills and Lauren Hollet had three aces for the Warriors.

Mount Vernon def. Upper Arlington 25-22, 13-25, 23-25, 25-23, 15-13

Host Mount Vernon rallied to win the final two sets to take a five-set thriller over Upper Arlington in non-league play on Oct. 5.

Emma Summerfield had 11 kills to go with 14 digs, Maddy Burdette had 22 digs and Maddie Sensel had 22 assists and four aces to lead the Yellow Jackets.

Centerburg def. Utica 20-25, 25-14, 25-20, 25-23

After falling in the first set, host Centerburg regrouped and took the next three to defeat Utica in non-league play on Oct. 5.

Stella Weisbrod was solid on both offense and defense for the Trojans (6-9), recording 20 digs and 19 kills.

Gracie Wolford had 36 assists and eight digs; Taylor Scowden had eight digs, seven kills and five blocks; Gwyn Sands put down seven kills and four blocks and Kiley Schaeferle dug out 13 balls to lead Centerburg.

Liley Borem had 16 kills and three aces; Sydni Cunningham had 16 digs; Emilee Ellis had 15 assists, 14 digs and three aces; and Bella Ellis had 17 assists and 13 digs to top Utica (2-14).

Johnstown def. Fredericktown 25-18, 29-27, 25-14

Audrey Bouton put in a well-rounded effort with 12 kills, 11 digs, 3.5 blocks and three aces for Fredericktown. But the Freddies lost to visiting Johnstown in non-league action on Oct. 3.

Lindsey Boeshart had 13 digs and seven kills, Grace Sipes and Emma Hatfield had 13 digs apiece, Katie Mull dished out 13 assists and Gabby Daniels added six kills for the Freddies (6-8).

BOYS SOCCER

Mays Gunderson’s goal in the second half lifted Mount Vernon to a 1-0 victory over Watkins Memorial at Yellow Jacket Stadium on Oct. 3.

Bryce Wiles had the helper on the Gunderson goal, and Christian Dean stopped six shots in goal for the Yellow Jackets (7-5-1).

GIRLS SOCCER

Highland faced a stingy defense and opportunistic offense and fell to Columbus School for Girls 5-0 in non-league play Oct. 3 in Sparta.

Kayley Smith stopped 12 shots in goal for the Scots (7-4-1), who saw their five-game winning streak snapped.
