Alexa Skal scored three goals to lead the Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s soccer team to a 4-0 win over St. Francis in Crossroads League play on Sept. 23 in Mount Vernon.
Kayla Kalischuk also scored a goal in the game for MVNU. Adison Preston had two assists and Skal, Melanie Critzer and Emily Hansen each had one apiece.
Skal has six of MVNU’s 14 goals on the season.
Lily Jakuszewski stopped the only shot she needed to earn the shutout for the MVNU.
Sarah Lewis made eight saves in goal for St. Francis (1-2, 0-2).
Marian 2, MVNU 0
Erin Oleksak scored a goal and added an assist to lead second-ranked Marian to a 2-0 win at MVNU on Sept. 26.
Chloe Ulmer scored what turned out to be the game-winner off an Oleksak feed in the 44th minute. Siera Stuart also had an assist and Noelle Rolfsen stopped for shots in goal for the Knights (5-0, 4-0).
Lilly Jakuszewski had three saves for the Cougars (2-2-1, 1-2-1).
MEN’S SOCCER
Lords notch academic honor
The Kenyon men’s soccer team was honored with a team academic award on Sept. 24 by the United Soccer Coaches.
The honor goes to teams with a minimum 3.0 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale. Kenyon had team GPA of 3.30 and was one of 333 teams to receive the accolade.
The Lords, like all Kenyon fall teams, are sitting out the 2020 season. They finished 19-2-2 overall last season.
MVNU 1, Marian 0
Gerardo Molina’s goal in the 80th minute sent MVNU to a 1-0 win over Marian in Crossroads League play on Sept. 26 in Indianapolis.
Birkir Sigurddson and Jared Mount each assisted on the game-winner for the Cougars (3-2, 3-1).
Josh Dunn had eight saves in goal to preserve the shutout.
Kim Schwensen stopped five shots in goal for the Knights (1-3-1, 1-2-1).
St. Francis 3, MVNU 1
Moses Magens scored just 1:55 into the contest for the MVNU men’s soccer team. But it was all St. Francis from there in a 3-1 win in Crossroads League play on Sept. 23 in Fort Wayne.
Nate Conder tied the game for St. Francis in the 37th minute and Josh Pedretti and Julian Colantonio each scored second half goals.
Joshua Dunn made four saves in goal for MVNU and Caleb Spencer had five saves for St. Francis (3-1-1, 2-1).
CROSS COUNTRY
Garrett Gemmaka ran a 26:40.3 to lead the MVNU men’s team to a second place finish out of five teams at the Cedarville Open on Sept. 26.
Gemmaka finished 21st out of 105 runners, leading the Cougars (61 points), who finished behind Walsh (15).
Sam Swanger (32nd, 27:23.6), Clayton Slemmons (38th, 27:44.9), Noah Stevens (56th, 28:29.6) and Clay Reynolds (61st, 28:47.5) also scored for MVNU.
Morgan Forney led the women’s team with a time of 19:17.8, placing 24th out of 104 runners at the Cedarville Open on Sept. 26.
Forney’s effort led the Cougars (93) finish third behind Cedarville (24) and Walsh (31).
Macy Krasofsky (38th, 19:49.2), Ashley Brown (40th, 19:52.9), Kaylin Shackelford (50th, 20:28.6) and Sarah Thatcher (60th, 21:03.9) also scored for MVNU.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Paige Brenner dished out 24 assists and added seven digs to lead MVNU to a 25-19, 25-15, 25-21 win over visiting Spring Arbor in Crossroads League play on Sept. 26 at Ariel Arena.
Nicole Winker had eight kills, Ellie Ruby had 14 digs and Mary Kate Harmody had two blocks and assisted on two others for MVNU (3-3, 3-3).
Alison Ford had nine kills, Paige Porter had 17 digs, Emily Martin had 15 assists and Claudia Ellis had four blocks to lead Spring Arbor (3-3, 3-3).
MVNU def. Goshen 25-12, 25-16, 25-7
Nicole Winkler turned in another solid performance with 11 kills to lead the MVNU women’s volleyball team. The Cougars started fast and finished strong in a straight-set win over host Goshen in Crossroads League play Sept. 24.
Winker finished with 11 kills and a pair of blocks to lead the Cougars (2-3, 2-3).
Brenner had 22 assists and 10 digs, Ellie Ruby also had 10 digs and Mary Kay Harmody chipped in seven kills and a pair of blocks for MVNU.
Madi Simmons had 15 assists, Haylee Pennington had nine digs and Madison Coles had five kills to lead the Maples Leafs (0-5, 0-5).
MEN’S TENNIS
MVNU, seeded eighth in its first appearance in the Crossroads League tournament, fell 7-0 at top-seeded Indiana Wesleyan in a quarterfinal on Sept. 22 in Marion, Ind.
MVNU 5, Lourdes 2
Drew Jackson highlighted the MVNU men’s tennis team’s 5-2 win over Lourdes in non-conference play Sept. 25 in Mount Vernon.
Jackson outdueled Lourdes’ Ulises Barradas 6-4, 5-7, 12-10. It was the only victory of the afternoon that wasn’t by default for the Cougars (2-8).
WOMEN’S TENNIS
MVNU’s women’s team also made its first appearance in the Crossroads League tournament. But the Cougars, seeded seventh, fell 7-0 at second-seeded Marian University in a quarterfinal on Sept. 22 in Indianapolis.
MVNU 6, Lourdes 1
Alyson Landis won a three-set thriller to highlight MVNU’s 6-1 win over Lourdes in non-conference play on Sept. 25 in Mount Vernon.
Landis beat Niki Polce of the Sea Wolves 2-6, 6-0, 10-8.
Hailey Clayborn, Laurel Sidle and Emma Harville also picked up singles victories for the Cougars.
Clayborn and Ashley Weber picked up a win and the Cougars (3-5) won a by default in the third match to earn the doubles point.
MEN’S GOLF
Michael Hahn bookended the Bill Bockwitz Classic with a 75 in the opening round and a 77 in the final round to finish tied for 24th out of 68 golfers with an overall 234 score.
Hahn’s effort led MVNU to a ninth-place finish (938) out of 14 teams behind tournament-winner Marian (880).
Dylan Errington and Brandon Main each shot 237s over the three rounds, Jordan Hoag was close behind with a 238 and Brock Dettmer fired a 240 for the Cougars.
