The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s and womens’ tennis teams both earned their first trip to the Crossroads League Tournament, which is set for today at the better seed’s site.
The womens’ team is seeded seventh in the tournament and will travel to Marian. The men’s team, seeded eighth, will play at top-seeded Indiana Wesleyan.
The men’s team was swept at home by Marian (6-1) and Huntington (7-0) on Sept. 18. Danny Moyette defeated Marian’s Dmitrii Voshchenkov 6-7, 6-1, 10-3 in singles action to earn the Cougars’ lone win of the day.
The women’s team was also swept by Marian (6-1) and Huntington (5-2) in Crossroads League action Sept. 18 in Mount Vernon.
Alyson Landis won by default over Payton Haygood to give MVNU its lone win against Marian.
Against Huntington, Emily Allison defeated Molly Burton 4-6, 6-4, 11-9 and Sarah Young picked up a 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) win over Kate Hendrickson.
MEN’S SOCCER
Orecchio takes home Crossroads League Defender of the Week
Joshua Orecchio helped the men’s soccer team pitch a shutout in a 1-0 win over Spring Arbor on Sept. 16. But he also scored the team’s only goal, which came on a penalty kick in the 65th minute.
Orecchio’s effort against Spring Arbor (on Sept. 16) and Taylor (on Sept. 19) earned him Crossroads League Defender of the Week.
MVNU 3, Taylor 2
Joshua Sitney scored two goals, including one that turned out to be the game-winner, in MVNU’s 3-2 win over Taylor in Crossroads League play on Sept. 19.
Sitney’s second goal, which came at the 48:59 mark, put the Cougars ahead 3-1.
Gerardo Molina scored the other goal for MVNU; and Stitney, Keon Boney and Moses Margens each tallied an assist.
Gabe Bowron and Owen Hardy each scored goals and Joaquin Hansen recorded seven saves in goal for Taylor (0-3, 0-2).
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Bethel def. MVNU 25-23, 26-24, 25-19
Nicole Winkler had a game-high 11 kills to lead MVNU, but the Cougars fell in straight sets to Bethel in Crossroads League play on Sept. 19 at Ariel Arena in Mount Vernon.
Paige Brenner had 29 assists and Ellie Ruby had 17 assists for MVNU (1-3, 1-3).
Maddy Payne had 10 kills and six blocks, Madyson Beaver had 25 assists and Payton Hart had 17 digs to lead Bethel (4-1, 4-1).
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Taylor 3, MVNU 2
MVNU’s Alexa Skal knotted things up with a goal in the 50th minute. But Erin Teevans hit the game-winner in the 77th minute to lift host Taylor to a 3-2 win in Crossroads League action on Sept. 18 in Upland, Ind.
Teevans had two goals for Taylor, the first of which came in the 16th minute to put the Trojans (3-0, 2-0) up by two goals.
Maddie Critzer answered for the Cougars (1-1-1, 0-1-1) in the 39th minute before Skal’s game-tying goal.
Lilly Jakuszewski had five saves in goal for MVNU, and Hannah Brackenbury stopped three shots for Taylor.
