Mount Vernon Lions Club update

MOUNT VERNON – Sept. 17 was the 50th anniversary of the Mount Vernon Lions Club. They have served the Mount Vernon community for 50 years by buying eyeglasses for children and adults, buying guide dogs, school supplies, holding preschool vision screenings and many other projects.

The Ohio Lions are also celebrating 100 years of service. Our motto is "We Serve," and we do all over the world. This year we have added "Serving With Kindness" as the District Motto.

Mount Vernon Lions Club officers for the 2020-2021 year are as follows: president, Tom Cropp;1st vice president, Penny Given; secretary, Penny GIven; treasurer, Ellen Cropp; membership chair, Dodie Melvin; program chair, Dodie Melvin; lion tamer, Hank Antill; tail twister, Donna Gutridge; 1-year director, John Mizer; 2 year director, Betty Jo Morrison-Mizer; and past president, Penny Given.

On Aug. 11, the members invited Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Carol Grubaugh. She spoke about the history and benefits of Chamber membership. The members voted to become members of the Chamber.

On Aug. 25, the Mount Vernon Lions Club hosted the Ohio District OH7 Zone 1 district zone meeting. The Club turned in 576 pairs of used eyeglasses that the public donated in boxes placed by the members throughout the community.

Because of the COVID-19 virus, the members have not been able to hold any fundraising projects or service projects, but we have been buying glasses and the demand has gone up. The members will, however, be having their annual Christmas poinsettia sale. You can start ordering by contacting any Lion Club member or calling President Tom Cropp at 740-504-6372. The funds will go for sight preservation.

The Mount Vernon Lions Club welcomes people who are interested in the projects that they do. For more information, call Tom Cropp at 740-504-6372 or Joe Gutridge at 740-397-8919.

Fall enrollment numbers strong at MVNU

MOUNT VERNON – A solid campus-wide recruitment effort enabled Mount Vernon Nazarene University to celebrate strong enrollment numbers for fall 2020, as many surveys projected fewer students on campus due to the pandemic.

“Our fall enrollment is a testimony to the energy and commitment of our admissions team and the desire of our students to be here," MVNU President Henry W. Spaulding II, told the Mount Vernon News. "God has blessed us with a great community that attracts and retains students."

First-time college admissions numbers jumped to 345, and overall enrollment in the traditional undergraduate program remained steady at 1,393. Enrollment in the School of Graduate and Professional Studies also remained steady with 379 in undergraduate programs and 369 pursuing advanced degrees, bringing the university’s total enrollment for fall 2020 to 2,141.
