The Mount Vernon Nazarene women’s volleyball team battled back after a first-set loss to beat host Huntington in four sets, giving Kendra Mosher her first victory as coach of the Cougars.
Nicole Winkler had 18 kills and nine digs, Ashley Stumpworth added 12 kills and Mary Kate Harmody chipped in 10 kills to lead MVNU to a 25-27, 25-22, 26-24, 25-20 victory over the Foresters in Crossroads League action on Sept. 12.
Ellie Ruby had 14 digs and Erica Gasser blocked five shots to lead the Cougars (1-1, 1-1).
Brea Metz had 14 kills and Ariene Butler had 18 digs to lead Huntington (0-3, 0-3).
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Freshman Maddie Critzer made an immediate impact by scoring the only goal the Mount Vernon Nazarene women’s soccer team needed in its season-opener at Rio Grande on Sept. 12.
But the Cougars weren’t done there. Sarah Townsend scored three goals and MVNU rolled to a 7-0 win over the Red Storm in non-conference play.
Ashley Townsend, Alexa Skal and Sarah Gulpe each tallied goals and Adison Preston had two helpers for the Cougars (1-0).
Lilly Jakuszewski saved the only Rio Grande shot.
Rachel Wolford and Morgen Nutter each stopped four shots in goal for the Red Storm (0-1).
COLLEGE CROSS COUNTRY
Morgan Forney (19:12.0) finished 16th out of 179 total runners to lead the Mount Vernon Nazarene women’s cross country team at the Indiana Wesleyan University Wildcat Twilight Invitational on Sept. 11 in Marion, Indiana.
The Cougars placed ninth (258 points) out of 18 teams behind winner Taylor (73).
The men’s team also finished ninth (242) out of 18 teams behind winner Taylor (63).
Justis Paul (14th place) led the Cougars with a time of 25:57.0. MVNU won a sixth-runner tiebreaker with Spring Arbor.
WOMEN’S GOLF
Peyton Broce shot a two-round score of 157 to lead the Mount Vernon women’s golf team at the Players Club Invitational in Upland, Indiana, Sept. 11-12.
Broce posted a team-best 77 in the second round to help the Cougars (686) to a sixth-place finish out of seven teams behind Taylor’s Team A (603).
COLLEGE TENNIS
The Mount Vernon men’s and women’s tennis teams fell by identical 7-0 scores to Grace at Goshen on Sept. 12.
Both Cougars’ teams matches against the host Maple Leafs were suspended due to rain and will continue Sept. 16.
The men’s team is now 0-3 overall and 0-3 in the Crossroads League, while the women’s team fell to 0-1 overall and 0-1 in league play.
