Cross country

Thomas Caputo got the year started off right, running a 16:21.18 to win at the Newark Catholic Invitational on Aug. 29 at the Bryn Du Mansion in Granville. His effort led the Fredericktown boys cross country team to a first-place finish over 17 other teams.

Caputo beat out 170 other runners over two sections to earn top honors for the Freddies, who scored 107 points to beat out second place Watterson (120).

Titas Krabill (17:36.16) finished seventh, Evan France (18:20.17) was 18th and Xavier Platt (18:29.17) followed at 19th for the Freddies.

Hunter Bolton (17:47.04) and Joel Roberts (17:55.32) finished eighth and 11th respectively to help Highland (133) to a fourth-place finish behind Columbus Academy (132).

Silas Buckenberger (18:45.57) finished 28th to help Utica (213) finish 10th.

In girls action, Elsa Hoam (20:37.80) finished fourth and Natalie Vanmeter (21:26.81) was ninth to help the Freddies (144) to a fourth-place finish behind Watterson (79), Hartley (84) and Teays Valley (85).

Lauren Gerber (23rd, 23:00.10), Mia White (25th, 23:20.41) and Jade Disbennett (26th, 23:24.53) to lead the Scots, which finished 10th in the 18-team event.

Riley Waggoner (44th, 24:27.39) led Utica, which finished 16th.

Girls volleyball

Highland def. Big Walnut 25-17, 25-21, 25-18

Kendall Stover had 12 kills and 15 digs and Makenna Belcher added 11 kills and 13 digs to lead the Highland volleyball team to a straight-set win at Big Walnut in non-league action Aug. 29 in Sunbury.

Zoya Winklefoos and Ashlynn Belcher, who also had five aces, had 16 kills apiece for the Scots.

Boys soccer

Mount Vernon 6, Mansfield Christian 0

Jack Craigo’s first-half goal gave the Mount Vernon boys soccer team all the offense it needed. But the Yellow Jackets blew up for five goals in the second half to roll to a 6-0 win over Mansfield Christian in non-league play Aug. 29 in Mount Vernon.

Isaiah Jones scored a hat trick and added an assist and Mays Gunderson tallied two goals to help the Yellow Jackets run away.

Parker Gantt and Andrew White each dished out an assist and Christian Dean made one save in goal for Mount Vernon, which travels to Big Walnut in non-league play Thursday night.

Girls golf

Watkins Memorial’s Gracie James won a three-hole scorecard playoff over Newark Catholic’s Anna Crumrine to win top honors at the Freddie Invitational on Aug. 29 at Hiawatha Golf Course in Mount Vernon.

Ammaih Gammell led Centerburg (450) to a fourth-place finish behind Watkins Memorial (346), Newark Catholic (364) and Ontario (447) in the seven-team event.

Highland (466) finished fifth, followed by Elgin (490) and Fredericktown (494), which was led by Makayla Frazier (100).
