Highland Local School District - Marengo

The Highland baseball had a solid season and were well represented in postseason awards, led by outfielder Hayden Kline who was first team All-Ohio, All-MOAC and All-District.

Highland will have a new soccer coach at the helm next season, as the school district announced that Megan Dever will be coming on board this fall as the fourth head soccer coach in school history.

The Highland Fighting Scots took a one run lead early and out-hit Coldwater in the Division III Regional Semifinals on May 30, but the Cavaliers found a way to outscore their foe to take a 4-2 win to advance to the finals.

No. 2 Highland ripped through the Division III Central 1 Section/District tournament to become the district champions, after beating No. 6 Newark Catholic in the finals.

No. 11 Highland won the opening round of the Division II, Central 1 softball playoffs, but had trouble with No. 4 Licking Valley in the Sectional Finals, taking a 10-0 loss to finish their season 5-15.

Make it 11 straight wins for the Highland baseball team, as the Fighting Scots improved to 17-2 and 9-2 in in the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference with back-to-back wins over the Clear Fork Colts.

The Highland baseball team continued their torrid start to the season with a pair of wins over Lexington and Lucas last week, making it six straight and a 12-2 record for the Fighting Scots.

Jayden Collins set the table nicely, while Kort Sears and Zach Church combined for seven RBIs, in a 12-5 win for Highland over Galion on April 16.

The Mount Gilead track and field teams traveled to a four team meet at Highland High School on April 9, with the boys’ team taking the top spot, and the girls being runners up behind Highland.

The Highland baseball team lost three key players to graduation, but they bring back a terrific core of players who look to continue their success coming off a strong 2023 campaign.

Local girls’ wrestling teams recently competed at the Pre-Registration Tournament: Region 4 at Claymont High School, and while Warren took the top spot with 167 points, here are some highlights from Mount Vernon News coverage area teams.

The No. 15 Highland girls’ basketball team took on No. 3 Centennial in the first round of the Division II Central 1 Sectional tournament on Feb. 21, and despite a 16 point effort for Bryleigh Young, the Lady Scots fell 67-52 to end the season with an 8-15 record.

Local girls’ wrestlers competed last weekend, with athletes from Mount Vernon and Highland taking wins in their respective weight classes.

Emotions were high in Highland where the Lady Scots (8-13, 5-9) honored the late Emma West, and Highland was able to put that energy into their play with a 50-30 win over a talented Danville (15-7, 8-4) team on Feb. 13.

The three ball was flying for the Lady Scots (7-12, 5-8) against reigning KMAC champion Mount Gilead (10-11, 6-6) on Feb. 6, and while the Indians made a push at some late game heroics, Highland took a 48-45 victory to stop their three game skid.

The final month of regular season action is here for the local girls' basketball teams, and here are a few games highlighted from last week as the teams focus on finishing strong and setting themselves up for the postseason.

The Division IV and Division V All-Ohio football teams were announced on Dec. 5 and a number athletes in the Mount Vernon News coverage area were included, including eight players from West Holmes.
