Dane Nauman put on a clinic on the gridiron last year in a season in which the star running back was named Mount Vernon News Athlete of the Year. Entering his senior year, Highland is looking for another monster season on the ground to propel them to the playoffs.

Eleven student-athletes won the the ATHLETE of the WEEK honor more than once, two won it three times and one competitor took home the honor five times. The finalists: Dane Nauman (Highland), Grant Bentley (Northmor) and Nathan Streby (East Knox). And the MVN Male ATHLETE of the YEAR is Dane Nauman.
Coach Stover: Highland names ex-Scot to take over basketball program

Highland Local School District's basketball program is under new leadership and they have selected one of their own to take the reigns. Highland High School Athletic Director Mike DeLaney has announced that Ryan Stover has taken over as boys head basketball coach.

For this year, there were many deserving student-athletes, but we cut the list down to three female finalists, and have selected one overall winner as the Mount Vernon News FEMALE ATHLETE of the YEAR. There is a definite lean toward the track this year. The finalists are: Juliette Laracuente-Huebner, Madilyn Elson and Elsa Hoam.

Highland’s Thomas twins sign to play soccer at Heidelberg

The Highland Fighting Scots soccer team is graduating the first two soccer players in their program’s history to go on to play collegiately for an NCAA program. Twin brothers, Cody and Dylan Thomas, signed to play at Heidelberg University (Tiffin, Ohio), during a signing event on March 21 at the Highland High School cafeteria/auditorium.

Black Bear Relays: Mount Vernon boys and girls take home gold

The track season broke the tape in powerful fashion with the Black Bear Relays on March 25 at River View High School in Warsaw, Ohio. Of five teams competing, Mount Vernon dominated and Highland placed well.

The Highland girls’ basketball team is coming off a tough season in which the Fighting Scots went 8-15 and 4-10 in the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference, but Coach Matt Bradley hopes that another year of experience for his squad will lead to more wins this winter.
