The Highland wrestling team took first place at the Tom Ellis Classic on Dec. 9, led by Hunter Taylor as the 190 pound champion going 5-0 with five pins.
“I've coached Boo (Hunter) since he was in youth (sophomore currently),” said Coach Adam Gilmore. “He had to miss the end of last season due to an injury. He's a great kid. 3 sport athlete (baseball, wrestling and football). Great to see him start off the season with 5 pins and an individual championship.”
Highland led the way with a score of 329.5, beating out Madison Comprehensive at 280; Northwest with 240; Loudonville with 233; Sandusky with 161; South Central with 156; Mansfield Senior with 119; Cardington-Lincoln with 107; Fredericktown with 100 and Calvert with 52.
Highland had six champions on the day. Brady Byler won 1X6 in the 106 class; Brendan Lester won 2X4 in the 120 class; Cael Gilmore won 2X4 in the 150 class; Liam Delaney won 2X4 in the 157 class; Remington Baker won 2X4 in the 165 class; Taylor won 2X5 in the 190 class.
“I thought the team wrestled well for the first outing,” said Coach Gilmore. “We have some veterans as well as some brand new wrestlers. I thought the veterans looked farther ahead of where they were week one of last year. I was pleased to see the new wrestlers try the techniques we drill in practice. They will keep getting better as they stay aggressive and get more experience.”
