Fredericktown and Highland went head to head in girls’ basketball on Nov. 23, and Cally Carpenter put on a show for the Freddies to lead the team to a 51-37 win over the Lady Scots.
"I'm proud of the way the team fought," Fredericktown Coach Jared Pryor said. "They brought great energy and effort from start to finish.
The Freddies went up 12-5 to start the game, setting the tone the rest of the way as Fredericktown led in every quarter. They had a 23-15 lead at halftime, and then outscored the Lady Scots 15-11 and 13-11 in the final two quarters.
In 29 minutes, Carpenter went 10-for-13 from the floor with 25 points. She was 3-for-5 from downtown and 2-for-3 from the line. Carpenter added five boards, one assist and four steals. Ella Bouton also hit double figures with 13 points, going 3-for-5 from three. She tallied six boards, four assists, six steals and a block in a night where she stuffed the stat sheet. Jill Bouton added eight points, six boards, two assists, two steals and three blocks.
The Lady Scots were led by Bryleigh Young, who was the only Highland player in double figures with 19 points. She also had five boards, one assist, one steal and a block. Amarie Morgan had seven boards, an assist and a block to go with two points. Addie Mullins had five points, seven rebounds and four assists.
"Really thought it was a team win and everyone played an important role," Coach Pryor said.
“Bryleigh had a great night for us, shooting the basketball and also driving it to the basket,” said Highland Coach Matt Bradley. “She played well in our scrimmages, and that confidence carried over.”
Bradley said the Lady Scots played hard and had great stretches in the game, but need to be more consistent both offensively and defensively. This was the first varsity game for much of the squad, and it was a good learning experience to have. He also gave credit where it was due, saying “hats off to Fredericktown.”
“They played very well, and I think Cally Carpenter is as good a guard there is in the area,” Bradley said.
