Utica fades after early lead, falls 51-36

The Utica boys basketball team went down the road to play Johnstown after a week of bad weather. The Redskins lost 36-51.

The game was played at Johnstown-Monroe High School on January 30.

Utica led 12-7 after the first quarter, but Johnstown kicked off their offense in the second quarter, going into the second half leading 17-26 over the Redskins. Utica outscored its opponents by three points in the third, but Johnstown still led going into the final quarter. Johnstown went out with a bang, scoring twenty points to win the game, while Utica scored sixteen.

Scoring was spread out fairly evenly for the Redskins, however, Hunter McKinney pulled ahead with nine points. Closely behind were Nate Hite and Weston Simon with eight, and following them was Kamden Hall with seven. The leading scorer for the night belonged to Johnstown. Liam Deering scored twenty-two points, half of them coming from Johnstown’s second-quarter push.

Utica’s next game is away against Licking Valley on February 3. The game will be the second of a four-game away stand.

Utica’s most recent game against Johnstown also resulted in a loss with a score of 45-42 on December 20 at home.
