The Utica Redskins faced off against Newark Catholic in an away game on Tuesday, December 2nd, winning by a 22 point margin, 53-31.

The win puts Utica at 1-1 on the season, with a close first game loss to Fredericktown at home on November 25th.

After Utica’s tall star junior Emily Ritzer was injured in the first quarter of Utica’s first game against Fredericktown, the rest of the team had to step up to fill the gap.

Utica is a team of veterans, compared to the young Newark Catholic team. Utica only graduated one senior last year, and has five seniors rostered this season.

Callie Baker, with an already hot start to the season, played a large role in Utica’s win. A fellow senior, Makena Wilson, added 10 points to the winning team’s tally. Throughout Utica’s two regular season games, Wilson has played a huge role in Utica’s scoring.

Baker also was a huge part in Utica’s defensive game, with a leading number of 5 steals.

Utica also starts this season with a new head coach, Micah Keith.

Newark Catholic’s Leah Caudill also put up impressive numbers, with a 15 point night and 3 steals on the defensive end. Newark Catholic’s other contributors were sophomore Aubrey Winter and junior Avery Yehle with 6 points each, and senior Sydney Gummer with 4.
